I am very reserved: beautiful leaves but very very weak roots in a turf only. A very young cutting, definitely not to be put in a hill soil, its preferred soil. Luckily, I have a sandy soil, but I remain doubtful about its survival this summer.

Description

Euphorbia characias Black Pearl deserves its name, its flowering is splendid: Long clusters composed of multiple small flowers whose colour resemble that of a lime with pretty touches of a very dark burgundy leaning towards black. The effect is striking. Its long reddish-tinged stems bearing evergreen blue-green leaves complete the picture and give it a very exotic look.

Euphorbias have multiple characteristics. Their common features for the characias species: foliage and flowering that are always very decorative, a preference for a sunny exposure and a well-drained or even dry, rocky and even poor soil. Their stems start from the base and form a rather tall bushy clump, 80 cm (32in) or more for Black Pearl. They are covered with rather long lanceolate leaves, minimum 10 cm (4in)  topped with inflorescences. These are grouped in clusters of at least 15 cm (6in) in height and covered with many small cyathia (this name is mainly attributed to Euphorbias). Do not hesitate to observe them closely and follow their blooming with changing colours, they are very delicate with their bracts as a collar. Euphorbias are quite essential in flower beds: a voluminous habit that gives volume, long-lasting foliage, and brightly coloured flowers.

Euphorbia characias Black Pearl is unique in its flowering. The contrast offered by the colours of its flowers is rarely found in our gardens. That is why it is important to make room for it in flower beds in spring. Indispensable in exotic gardens, it will also enliven the season for those who welcome spring bulbs and will occupy the space between all the other perennials for a good part of the year thanks to its foliage.

The only downside is that these plants have a significant characteristic. Their sap is made up of an irritating and toxic latex. Don't forget to always handle them with gloves, keep an eye on children playing nearby, and warn them.
