Perfect! The best investment for this part of the garden: so easy to plant, to maintain, very resistant to full sun, always a lovely colour. Everything has grown impeccably! You can't go wrong with this, it's perfect for our rocky garden with poor, well-drained soil along the cliff.

Description

With its evergreen foliage and green-yellow flower heads, the Euphorbia characias is a beautiful shrub that can reach over 1m (3ft) in size. It is highly decorative all year round.

Originally from the Mediterranean, it is highly adaptable to sunny and dry soil. Here in Bailleul (see photo), it has effortlessly covered a sunny staircase, where it casually unfurls its leaves, about twenty centimetres long, on the steps, bringing us a little taste of Provence.

Planting and care

For optimal growth, plant your Euphorbia in an area that receives full sun, although partial shade may also be suitable if the soil is neutral to chalky, even rocky. Euphorbias prefer well-drained soil that's fairly rich, but they can tolerate drought conditions. After the flowering season, pruning the flower heads can help prevent the Euphorbia from becoming too dense.

Care

Pruning instructions To keep your plant in good shape, remove long stems and those that have flowered during the winter. Only remove the most vigorous shoots that grew in the previous spring, as they are the ones that bear flowers. Be careful when handling the plant and wear gloves and goggles, as the latex in the stems and leaves can cause irritation.
