Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Jason Salter' carries an abundance of small yellowish cream flowers in early summer, marked with a beautiful brown-purple eye around a green base. This miniature cultivar quickly forms beautiful small tufts and can easily be used as ground cover. It is a refined and easy-to-grow perennial that will bring a lot of cheerfulness to borders and beds.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are  perennial and hardy plants whose foliage is deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen. The variety 'Jason Salter' grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach 45 cm (18in) in height, with a relative spread of 40 cm (16in); daylilies tend to spread a little when they like the soil. The flowers are small but numerous on an established plant. They measure about 6.5 cm (3in) in diameter; the petals in this variety are thick and slightly wavy. Each flower lasts no more than a day, but flowering is constantly renewed over a beautiful period between June and July. The foliage is linear, abundant and semi-evergreen. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more luxuriant and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in both shade and sun. Some can be invasive; do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Daylily is often called  "the perfect perennial" because of its vibrant colours and ability to tolerate any type of environment. Out of lack of modesty, it is a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Jason Salter' is a low and vigorous variety that can cover the ground in a short time; along a path or an alley, it will accompany perennial flax, erigerons, grape hyacinths, lilies or other small daylilies in orange tones. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or patio should be provided and chosen from among the dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Jason Salter' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will tolerate summer droughts and not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases and does not attract rodents. Daylilies thrive equally well in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant them by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If you plant multiple plants, make sure not to place them too close together, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, keeping the soil sufficiently moist is advisable. Divide the clumps, preferably in autumn, after flowering.
