Description

Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Sabine Baur' is absolutely stunning, with a soft and well-contrasted cream and plum colour. The petals are beautifully undulated and thick. The long flowering period is an additional asset for this extraordinary variety. Easy to grow and succeed, it deserves a special place in the garden where its personality will not go unnoticed.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. In this variety resulting from horticultural work, the clump will reach a height of 70 cm (28 in), with a spread of 50 cm (20 in), possibly more if the soil suits it. The flowers measure about 14 cm (6 in) in diameter. The very original colours of 'Sabine Baur' are enhanced by a touch of lemon-yellow at the centre of the petals. Individually, daylilies, as their name suggests, last only a day, but they continually renew over a beautiful period between June and August. Feel free to make beautiful bouquets with them. The foliage is linear and deciduous. It is a plant with short rhizomes and fleshy roots.

These perennials are very easy to grow and succeed both in shade and in the sun. Some of them can be slightly invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, after flowering in autumn. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial plant", because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty: it is beautifully exuberant and blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flower beds. 'Sabine Baur', with its lovely pattern, will go very well with more solid-coloured flowers in the same range of tones, such as a purple Japanese anemone or a 'Hella Glashoff' yarrow for the cream side. Consider summer-flowering bulbs and the flexible habit of grasses to lighten up your flower beds. If you want to adorn balconies and terraces with a daylily, you will need to use large pots with a minimum depth of 30 cm (12 in) and should choose dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where it is very popular. The flowers of these plants come in a wide range of colours and shapes. Over 60,000 cultivars, mostly resulting from hybridisations by gardening enthusiasts, are listed, appreciated and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Sabine Baur' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, and so there is no need to treat it. Rodents are not interested in it either. Daylilies thrive both in shade and in sun, requiring 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight. Plant them by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. If you plant multiple plants, do not place them too closely to each other as the gaps will quickly fill in. For a few weeks after planting, it is advisable to keep the soil moist. Divide the clumps preferably in autumn, after flowering.
