Hemerocallis Strawberry Swirl - Daylily

Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Swirl' is a new variety of daylily with large, lightly scented flowers in warm shades of pink and red! This daylily has a tall clump of ribbony leaves, bristly and then arching, in a vibrant medium green. From June to August, numerous rounded star-shaped flowers in coral-pink with a yellow throat surrounded by a dark pink halo bloom in succession. Its already long flowering period can be perpetual. It is a hardy perennial, robust and virtually maintenance-free, that can be used in borders, flower beds, and even in partially shaded or dry corners of the garden.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Hemerocallidaceae family, closely related to the lily family. These are hardy perennial plants with deciduous or semi-evergreen foliage. 'Strawberry Swirl', bred in 2016, reaches a height of 90 cm (35 in) with a width of 80 cm (32 in). The flowers are large, 14 cm (6 in) in diameter and star-shaped with slightly rounded petals with slightly crinkled edges. Individually, they last only for a day but continuously bloom from June to August. Daylilies have short rhizomes and fleshy roots. The stems are sturdy and make beautiful bouquets. The foliage is linear and evergreen. These plants are very easy to grow and thrive in both shade and sun. Some of them can be a bit invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. Daylilies are often called "the perfect perennial plant" due to their vibrant colours, ability to tolerate any type of environment, and their beautiful exuberance that complements other perennials well. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your borders. All summer flowering bulbous plants can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Strawberry Swirl' will fit perfectly into the setting of a romantic garden, with perennials in blue, pink, and white such as campanulas, penstemons, perennial flax, or phlox. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be used, choosing from dwarf varieties. Their exoticism and luxuriant foliage are wonderful along the edge of a pond or water feature, accompanied by plants with contrasting round or divided foliage such as marsh marigolds or willowherbs. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Many varieties have been developed in Japan, where they are very popular. The flowers of these plants come in a wide range of colours and shapes. More than 60,000 cultivars, mostly resulting from hybridisation by gardening enthusiasts, are listed, appreciated, and studied by international Hemerocallis societies.
