Description

Daylily 'White Temptation' bears large triangular flowers with undulated petals, they are white in colour with lemony shades at the centre. It is the variety that comes closest to pure white. Essential in a white garden, it is particularly floriferous.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. They are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous foliage, sometimes semi-evergreen. The 'White Temptation' variety grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach 75 cm (30in) in height, with a relative spread of 80 cm (32in). Daylilies tend to spread a bit when they like the soil. The flowers measure about 13 cm (5in) in diameter, the petals in this variety are thick and slightly wavy. Each flower lasts no more than a day, but the flowering is continuously renewed over a nice period between June and July. The stems are robust and work well in bouquets. The foliage is linear and semi-evergreen. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in both shade and sun. Some of them are slightly invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Daylilies are often called 'the perfect perennial', because of their vibrant colours and their ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to their lack of modesty, they have a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in the background of your flower beds. All summer flowering bulbs can be planted alongside daylilies. 'White Temptation' will fit perfectly in the composition of a white garden,  'White Prosperity' gladiolus planted at its base will be delighted to find a natural support, saving you from staking it, a white oriental lily will be enhanced and next to a viburnum for example, it will take over from its spring flowers. Dwarf cultivars are perfectly suited for container gardening to adorn a balcony or patio.  They will require a large pot of at least 30 cm (12in) deep.  The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'White Temptation' in good garden soil that is not clay but is enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive equally well in shade or sun, with 4 to 5 hours of sunlight a day being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If you plant multiple plants, avoid planting them too close together as the spaces will quickly fill in. For a few weeks after planting, it is advisable to keep the soil fairly moist. It is best to divide the clumps in autumn after flowering.
