Description

Heuchera 'Root Beer' is a variety of Heuchera appreciated for its highly decorative evergreen foliage in shades of bronze-red to purple and its cream-coloured flowers in June and July. It is a great cut flower and will add lightness to your bouquets.

Hardy to -15 °C (5 °F), this rhizomatous perennial grows in a dense, spreading habit. Its rounded, lobed leaves with distinct veins are bronze and turn orange-red, and are carried on long petioles. Delicate spikes of 35 cm (14 in) in height bear numerous small bell-shaped cream flowers, creating a very light and airy effect.

Heuchera 'Root Beer' is easy to grow and thrives in any humus-bearing and moist soil, in partial shade or light sun. To prevent the stump from lifting, mulch every year. Heuchera, once very popular in the gardens of our forebears, is making a comeback with new varieties in vibrant colours!

Heuchera 'Root Beer' is often used in large borders, paired with grasses or perennials with linear or variegated foliage. It also works well as a ground cover under trees, alongside ferns.

Tip: Create beautiful autumn planters with carex, cyclamen, and heather.

Planting and care

Heuchera 'Root Beer' is planted from September to April in a light, rich, moist, and well-drained soil in partial shade or light sun. Reserve a depth of 20 cm (8 in) and spacing of 30 cm (12 in). Mulch the soil in summer, fertilise potted plants, and divide old, sparse clumps in spring. During winter, heucheras regenerate their foliage, so it is best to cut back the previous year's leaves from January to February.
