Description

Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls' offers highly decorative foliage where different shades of metallic silver-grey, beautiful marbling, and pinkish-purple veins mix and succeed each other. In late spring and early summer, its pink flowers bloom in light and charming clusters, which can be used to create poetic bouquets. This variety develops into a dense cushion. It retains its leaves in winter and remains decorative throughout the year. Not demanding, it thrives in any fertile garden soil that remains somewhat moist in summer. It is a charming perennial for borders or semi-shaded containers.

Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls' belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. This excellent small garden perennial is a complex horticultural hybrid that possesses the genes of H. villosa, native to the mountains of the eastern United States, as well as those of its cousins H. micrantha and H. sanguinea. It will reach a height of about 30cm (12in) for the foliage and 45cm (18in) in width in 4 to 5 years. This heuchera forms a dense and low mound of leaves. The foliage is the plant's first asset: its round, lobed leaves, evergreen in winter, emerge strongly coloured in purple. At maturity, they take on metallic silver-grey reflections, adorned with striking pinkish-purple veins. The leaves have a red-purple underside. The light and airy flowering takes place in June-July. The bell-shaped flowers are pink at first, becoming white-pink, and are arranged along an upright, purple-coloured stem, 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18in) tall, which dominates the cushion of leaves. This plant has a shallow root system, and does not tolerate dry soils well.

'Silver Scrolls' is a jewel for the ornamentation of a border along a gently sunny path or a semi-shaded and fresh rock garden. Plant it near a walkway to be able to admire it as often as possible. It also adapts perfectly to container gardening. It will bring a touch of mystery and poetry to the garden. In partial shade or even full shade, plant it with hostas, carex, and painted ferns (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Red Beauty') for a wild effect. It is also an ideal ground cover, with remarkable colours, and is superb at the base of roses. Combine this heuchera with the 'Creme Brulee' cultivar or with blue or pink flowers, forget-me-nots, corydalis, or lungworts. Heuchera is perfect for filling your pots, containers, and large shaded planters. A good cut flower, the delicate bells of this plant bring lightness to bouquets.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole measuring 20x20x20cm (8x8x8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. Adding a base fertiliser (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without risk of burning. Firm the soil down and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Heucheras renew their foliage in late winter, so we recommend cutting back the previous year's leaves in January or February.
