More information

A spectacular variety. This hosta slowly forms a huge clump of very large, deeply veined, almost round leaves. They range from a dark green to a lighter green and are bordered by a random yellow margin. This variety deserves a prime location, in the garden or in a very large pot on the terrace. To be grown in fertile and moist, but well-drained soil, in partial shade or even in full shade.

Description

The Hosta UFO is a giant variety, a majestic plant for shade that forms a huge clump of deeply veined, almost round leaves. They emerge in dark green and quickly a narrow and irregular yellow border appears. Later in the season, the leaves lighten and take on a green-yellow hue. It blooms in the summer with spikes adorned with purple bells. This sensational plant takes its time to express its full potential, but it deserves a prime location, in the garden or in a very large pot on the terrace.

This Hosta, or Funkia UFO, resulting from the hybridisation of Hosta Gunther's Prize, was obtained by M. & J. Fransen. It is a deciduous perennial, completely hardy belonging to the asparagus family. This variety develops a giant clump starting from spring. The plant, mature in 6 years, reaches up to 1m (3ft) or 1.2m (4ft) in height and 1.5m (5ft) to 1.8m (6ft) in spread, if the conditions are right. The thick, heavy, leathery leaves, some cup-shaped, can measure up to 45cm (18in) long. They are almost round, slightly undulate and have well-defined veins. Their colour is dark green with a matte appearance, then a lighter green with a yellowish tinge. Flowering occurs in July-August, in the form of elongated mauve bells, clustered towards the top of the peduncles that emerge from the foliage. This perennial spreads by stolons, similar to strawberries. It is a long-lived plant. The leathery leaves of the Hosta UFO are highly resistant to slugs.

The placement of the Hosta UFO must be carefully considered and wisely chosen, as this eye-catching plant takes up space. For example, it can be placed in isolation to highlight the curve of a shaded path, on the edge of a woodland, sheltered from the wind, where the soil is deep and fertile. This large hosta pairs well with tall ferns, high meadow rues, rodgersias, or bamboos in partial shade.

Most species found in Western gardens have been introduced from Japan. Hostas, known as 'urui' in Japan, are commonly consumed and are edible.

Planting and care

Hostas are planted in spring or autumn. They prefer deep, fertile, humus-rich, loose soil, preferably neutral to acidic (at least low in limestone), moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or dappled shade and in a sheltered position away from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole of 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix half compost with crumbled soil, partially refill the hole and place your plant with its root ball so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a slow-release fertilizer (such as bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Make sure to position the collar well above ground level. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly in dry summers.

With their common preference for moist areas, slugs and snails never stray far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appetizing to slugs, these plants should still be protected from gastropods. Protect your Hostas by surrounding them with ferramol-based granules (approved for Organic Agriculture), eggshells, coffee grounds, mulch, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies when it comes to controlling gastropods, as unlike chickens, they do not dig up soil and do not attack the young green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repellent smell for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
