Description

The Hosta 'Blue Cascade' is a variety with intense blue colour, whose narrow and elongated leaves are strongly undulated on the edges. This well-frizzled foliage, with curled tips, is thick enough to discourage slugs and maintains its blue colour throughout the summer. It produces numerous lavender flowers in August. Whether planted in the ground or in pots, this unusual perennial is eye-catching. Place it on the edge of a woodland, in a contemporary or Japanese-inspired border, always in shade or partial shade, in cool and well-drained soil.

This Hosta, or Funkia 'Blue Cascade' is a fully hardy perennial of the lily family or hosta family, depending on the classification. The plant has a spreading, dome-shaped habit from spring onwards. It reaches a height of 35 cm and can spread up to 70 cm under the right conditions, usually in 5 or 6 years. It is a long-lived variety with narrow, lanceolate-shaped leaves that taper to a point. The lamina is very thick with a strongly undulated margin. The flowering usually occurs in August-September, in the form of elongated and pendulous bell-shaped flowers clustered at the top of 40 cm peduncles emerging from the foliage. All above-ground vegetation is deciduous and disappears in winter.

Hostas are often planted under deciduous trees or showcased in rock gardens and borders, especially near water features. This perennial is also suitable for container gardening or as a standalone plant. The Hosta 'Blue Cascade' pairs well with ferns, heucheras, caladiums, and astilbes, which share similar growing conditions. To enhance the beauty of its foliage, combine it with Carex, silver Caucasian forget-me-nots, or golden Hakonechloa, which provide contrasting colours as well as texture and leaf shape. Spring bulbs and creeping bugles can be planted as ground cover in front of the Hosta 'Blue Cascade' for beautiful harmonies.

Planting and care

Hostas can be planted in spring or autumn. Hostas prefer a deep, rich, humus-bearing, loose soil, preferably neutral to acidic (at least low in limestone), and consistently moist to wet throughout the year. Plant 'Blue Cascade' in partial shade or dappled shade, and in a sheltered location away from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole that is 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm. If your soil is heavy, mix equal parts of compost with crumbled soil, partially backfill the hole, and place the plant with its root ball so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3 cm of soil. Applying a slow-release fertiliser (bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Make sure to position the collar well above ground level. Firmly tamp down the soil and water thoroughly to eliminate any air pockets. If the weather is dry, regular watering will be necessary for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly during dry summers.

With their shared preference for moist environments, slugs and snails are never far away from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appealing to slugs, these plants still need protection from gastropods. Protect your hostas by surrounding them with ferramol-based pellets (approved for organic farming), eggshells, coffee grounds, wood chippings, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are gardeners' best allies in the fight against gastropods, as they do not till the soil like chickens and do not target the tender green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repulsive odour for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
