Description

Hosta Obi-One Kenobi is a small variety with unique and particularly bright foliage. Its shiny leaves with acid green edges are strongly tinted with yellow in the centre, which is itself crossed by irregular white streaks. Its summer flowers take the form of lavender spike flowers. Colour, as well as hardiness, characterise this lovely perennial shade plant. Very pretty in pots or as a border plant.

Hosta Obi-One Kenobi is derived from Hosta Appletini. It is a herbaceous perennial plant from the lily family or the hosta family according to classifications. Its vegetation, deciduous, emerges from the ground in spring and disappears in winter. The plant forms a small erect clump that only reaches 12-15 cm (5-6in) from the ground and spreads 35 cm (14in) in width. The leaves are heart-shaped with a pointed tip, thick and smooth texture, with very inconspicuous veins, carried by a rigid petiole. From July to August, a series of stems rise between the leaves, each bearing a terminal cluster of purple flowers that are slightly pendulous and fragrance-free. Hostas appreciate rich loamy soils, even heavy soil or clay, as long as they remain slightly moist even in summer. If they are happy, they will remain in place for years without requiring special care.

Combine this Hosta Obi-One Kenobi with the gold of Geranium phaeum Margaret Wilson, the old pink of Digitalis mertonensis, or the purple fronds of the Athyrium niponicum Pictum fern. All are very effective as slug repellents. The silver Brunnera macrophylla Mr Morse, familiar in the undergrowth, will be excellent company. Also consider the Heuchera and their wonderful range of colors, or the delicate fairy flowers (Epimediums). You will enhance the shaded and slightly damp parts of the garden. Hostas also thrive in pots, which should be placed in partial shade and watered regularly.

Planting and care

Hostas can be planted in spring or autumn. Hostas prefer a deep, humus-rich, loose soil, which is preferably neutral to acidic and moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or partial shade and in a sheltered position away from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix half compost with crumbled soil, partially backfill, and place your plant in a clump so that the top of the clump is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a fertiliser (bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Ensure that the collar is well above ground level. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to help the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly in case of a dry summer.

With their preference for humid areas, slugs and snails never stray too far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appetising to slugs, these plants must be protected from gastropods. Protect your hostas by surrounding them with granules approved in organic agriculture, eggshells, coffee grounds, mulch, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods because, unlike chickens, they do not dig up the soil and do not attack the lush green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repellent odour for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
