Description
'Bel Azur' is an intermediate garden iris of medium size, sought after for its uniform light blue flowering. Its flower is neither mauve nor lavender: it displays a clear azure hue on both petals and sepals, and is adorned with white beards that enhance this impression of clarity. It is also a floriferous variety, highly visible in borders, which precedes the large Iris germanica in spring.
This plant grows from fleshy, horizontal rootstocks at soil level, which multiply and gradually extend outward. The foliage, glaucous green, consists of erect sword-shaped leaves. The flower stem reaches 55-60 cm from the ground. A well-established plant occupies 35-45 cm in width after two or three seasons. Flowering occurs in mid-season of intermediate irises, usually in May in a medium climate. The flowers show the classic architecture of bearded irises: three upright petals in the centre, three trailing sepals, and a visible beard on each sepal.
'Bel Azur' is a French creation by Richard Cayeux, registered in 1993 and introduced by Iris Cayeux the same year. Its seedling number is 8713 C. Its parentage combines the cultivars 'Open Sky' and 'Swirling Seas'.
Plant this iris 'Bel Azur' in groups of three rootstocks spaced 30-35 cm apart, in a border of a bed, on a slope, or at the front row of a bed of tall irises. It will make an impact from the second flowering. Nearby, you can plant Geranium cinereum 'Ballerina' which remain low and flower pink after the irises, Allium 'Purple Sensation' which raise purple-violet balls in May, and Nepeta 'Purrsian Blue' which will take over in summer.

Planting and care
Plant Iris 'Bel Azur' from July to October, when the rootstock can root before winter, or in spring in heavy soils that remain moist in autumn. Choose a very sunny position, with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Prepare a light, friable, rather rich soil, neutral to calcareous or slightly acidic, but above all well-drained. In clay soil, plant on a slight mound and mix gravel or coarse sand into the planting soil. Place the rootstock almost at the surface, top exposed to the sun, then cover only the roots. Water after planting, then only during prolonged droughts in the first year. Remove faded flowers as they appear. Cut the spent flower stalks at the base, but keep healthy leaves until they yellow. Apply some well-rotted compost in spring, around the clump, without covering the rootstocks. Divide the clumps every three or four years, in summer, when the centre flowers less.
