Description

The 'Gnu Blues' German Iris, also known as the tall bearded iris, offers in May-June large unique flowers, "broken colours" with a pale blue-violet background marbled with darker blue-violet streaks, these streaks being random, each flower is unique. Violet beards with orange tips. Its growth is vigorous, and it quickly forms beautiful clumps. Ideal in flower beds, borders, on slopes.

The 'Gnu Blues' Iris is a rhizomatous and deciduous perennial plant, with clumps of upright growth from spring. It reaches 90cm (35in) in height when in bloom. It spreads without a theoretical limit, with the centre becoming less dense in favour of the periphery. The sword-shaped foliage is glaucous green and highly veined. In April, the flower stems appear and will bloom in May. The astonishing colour of this plant is, as always with garden irises, enhanced by the texture of the petals and sepals. Note that the flowers are also nicely scented.

The Iris flower bed, the iris garden: the paradise of the iris lover where the choice and arrangement of varieties (shape, colour, fragrance...) reflects each person's taste. The use of the entire range of bearded irises allows for two and a half months of flowers in spring. The choice of so-called reblooming irises offers a few additional flowers in late summer or autumn.

Planting and care

Provide an appropriate spacing according to the size and vigour of the variety: about 34-50cm (13-20in) for tall ones (5 to 10 feet per square meter). Dig a hole wide and deep enough. Create a conical heap of soil on which to place the rootstock and spreading roots. Cover the roots. It is important for the rootstock to be left just above the soil surface. It should not be planted in a depression (risk of rot), so anticipate that the soil will settle and the iris will sink. In clayey or damp soil, the rootstock should even be left elevated on a slight mound of a few centimetres. To make the soil adhere to the roots, lightly press it down and water abundantly upon planting. Water 2-3 times if necessary until it regrows. For a mix of colours, it is advisable for the overall aesthetic of the iris bed to plant them in groups of several young plants of the same variety. Always consider the direction of growth of the rootstock by arranging them in a star shape, with buds and leaves facing outward, and spacing them well from other varieties to allow for proper development.
