Description
Iris ‘Nuance Royale’ is a tall, mid-season bicolour iris, with chamois pink and velvety purple flowers accented by a tangerine beard. Plant this variety in a large sunny border or a gravel garden, among perennials that do not compete with its rhizomes. Its colouring will be enhanced by grey foliage, purple and mauve tones.
'Nuance Royale’ is a cultivar classified in the group of tall bearded iris. The plant grows from fleshy, horizontal rhizomes, visible near the soil surface. These rhizomes produce fans of erect, narrow, sword-shaped leaves, from glaucous green to bright green. In flower, ‘Nuance Royale’ reaches about 80cm in height. Its flower stems are branched in their upper part, bearing several buds that open from the top to the bottom of the stem. Flowering takes place in May, in the middle of the tall iris season. Each flower has 3 erect petals of chamois pink and 3 trailing sepals of violet-purple with a velvety appearance and a fine light mauve edge. The tangerine beards are clearly visible near the throat. The flowers are fragrant; their fragrance has a sweet note.
'Nuance Royale’ is a French cultivar created in 2010 and registered in 2026 by Richard Cayeux. Its pedigree involves 'Santiago Castroviejo' and 'Prague', then a second sowing from 'Santiago Castroviejo' with a line including 'Calypso Beat' and 'Secret Service'.
This variety 'Nuance Royale' can be used in a fairly wide perennial border or in a large bed. Its rhizomes need to bake in the sun and must be protected from overly exuberant neighbours. Its colouring pairs well with the purple of Allium atropurpureum and even the smoky pink of perpetual leek and the very violet spikes of Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'. Iris germanica 'Blue Sapphire', with its silver-blue flowers, will brighten this spring scene.

Planting and care
Plant Iris ‘Nuance Royale’ from July to October. Choose a very sunny exposure, with at least six hours of direct sun per day, as shade significantly reduces flowering. Plant it in fertile, neutral to lime-bearing, very well-drained soil; in clay soil, loosen widely and add gravel or coarse sand to prevent stagnant water around the rhizome. Place the rhizome almost at the surface, with the upper side visible to the sun, and bury only the roots. Space the young plants 30 to 40cm apart. Water at planting time, then only in case of prolonged drought during the first year. Remove faded flowers, cut spent flower stems at the base, and remove dry leaves at the end of winter.
Divide the rhizomes every three or four years, in summer, when the centre of the clump flowers less.
