Description
Iris Obsidian (TB) has dark purple petals with dark purple beards tipped with cream. This bearded Iris brings a touch of originality to the garden.
Everyone knows the Bearded Iris, which has become world-famous thanks to the paintings of Van Gogh and Monet.
Its wide sword-shaped leaves contrast with crumpled, multicoloured flowers. The flowers have three large upright petals and three silky and trailing sepals, with "beards" and flower for a few weeks in May/June. This Iris has large fleshy rhizomes that creep on the ground. It likes light, heat, and light and well-drained soils. It doesn't mind cold or summer drought, but dislikes moisture, especially in heavy soils. Superb in a sunny border, it is also great for making bouquets.
It is very robust and should be exposed to full sun, in dry and well-drained soil.
Plant Iris Obsidian in a border or flower bed, alongside yarrows, alliums, stipas, or roses. It is better to scatter them in groups of 3 or alone instead of creating uniform iris beds.

Planting and care
Iris Obsidian should be planted shallowly, with the rhizome exposed at ground level. Add sand if the soil is too heavy or wet and place the rhizomes on small mounds. Ensure good drainage to prevent the iris from rotting. During summer, this iris should be watered 1 to 2 times a month. After flowering, cut the flower stems to 10 cm (4in) from the ground. Damaged leaves should only be removed in autumn. Do not provide too much nitrogen as it increases the number of leaves at the expense of flowers. Taller flower stalks become brittle. The iris can be susceptible to heterosporiosis, a disease identified by oval brown spots on the foliage. Every 4 years in summer, divide the clumps after flowering by pulling out the entire plant and transplanting the most beautiful young plants from the rhizome, usually those on the periphery, to an area which has had no irises for a year.
