Iris Profond Mystère - Bearded Iris

Iris 'Profunde Mystère' is a recent variety of tall bearded iris with contrasting spring flowers. It has large, perfectly formed bicolour, slightly wavy flowers, with very light blue, upright petals, and almost horizontal velvety, deep violet sepals bordered with light violet. This variety has stout flower stalks, with low and well-distributed branching. Its flowers appear towards the end of the iris season. It is ideal in a mass planting or on slopes.

Iris 'Profunde Mystére' is a rhizomatous and deciduous perennial plant, with an upright tufted habit belonging to the Iridaceae family. It is one of many cultivars obtained over centuries, the controversial origin of which is debated around the number of chromosomes of potential ancestors. It should be noted that bearded irises have European origins. 'Deep Mystery' will reach 80 cm (32in) high when in flower, with numerous buds to guarantee a long flowering period, and the clump will spread indefinitely over time, with the central rhizomes becoming bare in favour of the outer rhizomes. It forms an elegant upright clump. The foliage consists of long sword-shaped, glaucous green leaves with prominent veins. Floral stems appear in April, with 6 to 7 flowers per stem in May, blooming from the top to the bottom. The contrasting colouration of this plant attracts attention, enhanced by the texture of the petals and sepals. The decorative beards of the 'Deep Mystery' iris are thick and range from burnt orange to copper-orange.

To accompany irises, plants should be chosen to match their needs (exposure, soil, etc.), growth (low-growing or light foliage plants), decorative appearance and flowering time. For example, Gaura will provide little shade to irises and keep the faded iris bed attractive throughout the summer. California poppies and love-in-a-mist will be happy with dry and poor soil, just like the irises. Blood-red cranesbill geraniums, salvias, and Libertias also complement irises very well. Slopes and terraced edges can be stabilised by dense plantings of old varieties that require little care. If the goal is more decorative and there is access for maintenance, more modern varieties can be chosen that are less likely to be knocked over by rain or wind.
