Freshly planted, this young plant has already grown well and doubled in size in two months. I planted it in partial shade, and it will brighten up a darker corner of the garden. Great.

Description

The Hybrid Anemone 'Satin Doll Rosé' is a compact, floriferous and colourful variety, selected for container cultivation and brightening small shaded spaces. This charming and well-presented plant blooms from July until autumn, producing a multitude of large bright pink flowers that emerge from carmine pink buds. A simple beauty that complements other late summer and autumn blooms. This perennial thrives in full sun or partial shade, in moist and rich soil.

The 'Satin Doll Rosé' anemone belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. Like other hybrids derived from the Japanese anemone, it is a perennial plant with fibrous 'tubers' that form large, vigorous and rounded clumps. The foliage is deciduous to semi-evergreen in winter, depending on the climate. The leaves are deeply lobed, dark green, strongly veined on the underside, and hairy.

In this variety, the habit is particularly compact: the plant will not exceed 35 cm (14in) in height when flowering, with a width of about 40 cm (16in). It can therefore find its place in your flower beds much more easily than its larger relatives with more wandering roots and a more imposing habit. The abundant flowering takes place from July to September, or even October, and is constantly renewed as long as the soil does not dry out too much. The flowers appear on strong, well-branched stems. They first appear as delightful oval and fuzzy buds, carmine pink in colour, and then open into simple, somewhat asymmetrical cups of pure and vibrant pink. The golden yellow centre is densely filled with stamens. Anemones can live for years in the same spot, as long as the soil is rich.

It will bring life to flower beds from summer to autumn, and can therefore accompany many other late summer blooms such as fuchsia 'Versicolor' , Rabdosia longituba, or late asters such as 'Stardust' Aster ageratoides, 'Beth Chatto' Aster divaricatus, or the New England asters and their numerous varieties. It can also be associated with fine foliage grasses for contrast, for example with Carex morowii 'Ice Dance'. They will also decorate large pots on the terrace from late summer until the first frost, and are excellent as cut flowers.

Planting and care

The Japanese anemone Satin Doll Rosé grows in partial shade, in a moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil without too much limestone. Plant it in a sheltered spot, spacing them 30 cm apart, in moist to wet soil. Once the young plants are established, they should not be disturbed. The flowering becomes more abundant as the years go by. In late autumn, cut the flower stalks to ground level. Every 2 or 3 years, add well-rotted compost to their base to enrich the soil, as they are quite hungry plants.

This Satin Doll Rosé variety has a compact habit, spreading only moderately in width.
