This young plant arrived at my place completely dried out (an incident at the post office delayed the delivery by 24 hours and it was very hot). It looked completely dead but I resisted the temptation to throw it away. Thankfully, it is starting to regrow and the shoots appear vigorous. I cannot predict what it will look like in the future.

Description

Japanese Anemone Robustissima is a beautiful robust and hardy perennial whose pale pink flowers, carried by sturdy flower stalks, appear in late summer.

The delicate and abundant flowers of the Anemone tomentosa Robustissima consist of pale pink inflorescences, 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, which appear between August and October. Emerging from a woody stump, the sturdy flower stalks rise to reach 1 meter (3 feet) tall and 60 cm (24in) wide. The dark green foliage, very dense at ground level, is strongly palmate with 5 lobes.

A vigorous plant when grown in suitable conditions, Japanese Anemone Robustissima thrives in cool, light and humus-rich soil. It tolerates brief episodes of drought and can withstand non-scorching sunlight. It thrives in semi-shaded or lightly sunny locations such as at the base of trees, on the edge of woodland or in the back of borders where it forms magnificent clumps.

You can plant it alongside Persicarias, Cimicifugas, and Perennial Geraniums. In late summer, they also accompany Rudbeckias, Hydrangeas, and Hostas.

And for your winter bouquets, place the budded stems, bearing dry-looking seed capsules, in a vase.  After 2 hours at room temperature you will see white flowers appearing.

Planting and care

Japanese anemone can be planted in spring or autumn. Choose a semi-shaded or non-scorching sunny location, sheltered from the wind. The soil should be rich, moist, and well-drained, as the Japanese anemone does not tolerate aterlogged soil, especially in winter. Avoid calcareous soils.  Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball and deep enough to accommodate a mixture of well decomposed compost or potting soil and garden soil. Place the root ball in the planting hole and fill with the same mixture. Gently tamp down and water generously. Space the plants 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24in) apart. During the summer, don't hesitate to water to stimulate flowering, especially in the first year. A layer of mulch will help retain soil moisture. If you notice a decrease in flowering, spread compost at the base of the plant in early or late winter. The stump benefits from being protected by dead leaves in regions with cold winters.
