Description

Compact, floriferous and full of character, Patio Peony 'London' is a little gem for container gardening enthusiasts. This early variety charms with its large double flowers, in a rich, rosy red, set off by finely cut dark green foliage. Its dense, neat habit makes this variety an excellent candidate for enlivening small gardens, balconies, or flower beds. This robust and easy-going little peony has no shortage of assets!

Patio Peony 'London' is a cultivar of Paeonia lactiflora, belonging to the Paeoniaceae family. 'London' is part of the Patio Peony™ series, developed in the Netherlands to offer peonies suited to container cultivation, while retaining the ornamental qualities of classic peonies. This 'London' cultivar has a bushy, upright habit and forms dense clumps. Its growth rate is moderate, with the young plant reaching its mature size in 2 to 5 years. In the ground or in a pot, its final dimensions approach 55 cm in height and 30 cm in spread. Its fully double flowers are a dark pink shading to red and measure 12 to 15 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs towards the beginning of the peony season, in May-June, and lasts about 3 weeks. The foliage is deciduous, composed of finely cut, dark green leaves. In autumn, the foliage turns yellow before disappearing in winter. The fleshy, tuberous roots of the peony store reserves for the following season. These roots allow the plant to survive harsh winters and regrow vigorously in spring.

With its compact habit and lush flowering, Peony 'London' lends a sophisticated and romantic air to balconies, patios, or structured small gardens. In a pot on a sunny terrace or at the edge of a border, the intensity of its flowering catches the eye. It can be paired with the lightness of Astrantia major ‘Roma’, the coppery foliage of Carex testacea 'Prairie Fire', or the airy flowering of Gillenia trifoliata. These companions, chosen for their elegance and complementary flowering, create a refined scene from late spring right through to the heart of summer.

Planting and care

Patio Peony 'London', like all peonies, does not like being moved, so careful consideration must be given to the right planting location. It can be grown in pots or in open ground. The best time to plant is in spring or autumn. Plant the crowns in a sunny or bright position, in deep, well-loosened soil, and above all, properly drained. They need space and dislike competition from other species. Prepare a hole 50 x 50 x 50 cm, add a thin layer of sand or gravel at the bottom to drain the roots, mix organic fertiliser into your soil, partially backfill, position your young plants and cover with 6 cm of soil above the buds. After planting, firm down and water generously. Once established, this peony requires no watering at all in summer in most regions, as it enters dormancy. In hot climates and particularly dry summers, however, a thorough watering every fortnight will be appreciated.
