Description
The Persicaria amplexicaulis alba, also known as bistort, smartweed or Polygonum, is a floriferous perennial that produces numerous spikes from July to September, measuring 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in length, composed of white bell-shaped flowers. The flowering is continuous throughout the summer. Thanks to its spreading habit, the plant is a good ground cover, which spreads spontaneously.
The Polygonum amplexicaule leaves are semi-evergreen. They are 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10in) long and have a medium green color. As autumn arrives, the leaves turn red. The plant is native to the Himalayas and has excellent hardiness. It can reach a height of 1.20 m (4ft) at maturity.
This Bistort brings joy to bees and butterflies that come to feed on it. It can be found at the back corner of flowerbeds where it fills the space without smothering nearby plants. It can also be placed in rock gardens, borders, and even in wet areas near lakes and ponds. It was once used as a culinary herb and for medicinal purposes.
