Received with other young plants, themselves with vegetation, the two vine-plants of Renoues were rather dull, not much seemingly alive. Planted in the ground, two days after receipt, I am waiting for them to recover.

Description

Persicaria amplexicaulis Orange Field is a variety of recent breeding polygonum that offers long-lasting flowers from summer to autumn in unusual spikes that are salmon pink to coral pink in colour. This hardy perennial forms a vigorous clump, both tall and dense, adorned with reddening foliage in autumn before disappearing. It is a robust plant, undemanding in terms of soil type, as long as it is fertile and well-drained.  Place in full sun or partial shade.

Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Orange Field' is a plant in the family of Polygonaceae. It is a semi-evergreen perennial that forms a clump of 1 m (3ft) tall. This plant spreads more or less slowly, depending on the richness of the soil, and can form imposing clumps. Very floriferous, this polygonum produces numerous spikes 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) long composed of small flowers, coral pink in buds becoming salmon pink as they open. The flowering is continuous throughout the summer, from July to October, if the soil does not dry out too much. The leaves, carried by sturdy stems, are lanceolate to cordate, measuring 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10in) long, and medium green to dark green, villous on the underside, and turn red in autumn.

Very trendy, this polygonum with astonishing colours fits well in both contemporary gardens and more wild environments and forms beautiful autumn scenes with grasses. Thanks to its spreading habit, it can be used as groundcover, making sure to leave it enough space. This polygonum likes both sun and partial shade. It prefers rich and heavy, even very wet soils and can be grown independently on sunny pond banks and even in a damp and partially shaded areas at the base of trees.

Planting and care

Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Orange Field' thrives in sunny or semi-shaded exposure. It is a very easy plant to grow, even tolerating moderate periods of drought if the receiving soil is deep. Plant it in any type of soil, as long as it is moist and humus-rich, in spring or autumn, in groups to create a mass effect. Enrich the soil with organic fertiliser at the start of the growing season, as it is a greedy plant. Control its growth so that it does not harm neighbouring plants. Mulch the soil in June in regions where the summer is hot and dry. Divide the clumps every three years in October and replant the divisions in another spot in the garden.
