Planted last autumn, the young plant is rather slow to establish.. I'm getting a little desperate.. five leaves that don't exceed 10cm (4in) in height... (but there is some improvement: the first one I ordered in 2016 didn't reappear at all in spring 2017..)

Description

Salvia verticillata 'Purple Rain' is a beautiful perennial sage that forms generous clusters of deep purple flowers in early summer, arranged in compact whorls.

Originally from meadows in Western Europe to the plains of Western Asia, the whorled sage is a very hardy perennial species characterised by flowers arranged in layered crowns, called whorls. The 'Purple Rain' whorled sage has intense deep purple flowers, carried on stems with violet tips, reaching a height of 60cm (24in).

The grey-green, hairy leaves are triangular. They first form a beautiful rosette before producing inflorescences throughout summer.

Easy to grow, 'Purple Rain' sage likes bright and sunny exposures, and grows in neutral or limestone, rich, moist, and well-drained soil. Resistant down to -20°C (-4°F), this sage dislikes heavy soils and winter humidity.

Plant it in a meadow garden, a mixed border, or a grass garden, where it forms beautiful associations.

Planting and care

Ideally, place Salvia verticillata 'Purple Rain' in a sunny location. Plant it in regular, well-drained soil. The whorled sage tolerates dry conditions and is drought-resistant once established, but it is sensitive to winter moisture. The abundant flowering reoccurs at the end of the season if one takes the trouble to cut the stems just after the first flowering.
