The scythe is a handheld gardening tool used for clearing vegetation that requires the use of both hands. It consists of a short or long, curved, tapered blade fixed perpendicularly to a relatively long handle. It has one or two handles, depending on the model. A metal piece called a tightening ring secures the blade to the handle. The scythe is useful for clearing areas that are inaccessible to a lawnmower, especially banks or areas overrun by nettles, thistles, and brambles.

To handle the scythe (for right-handed users):

• Stand upright while using the scythe
• Face the small area to be cleared
• The blade rests on the ground, with the tip to the right of the user and the handle slightly behind
• Make a lateral movement with both arms to bring the cut grass or vegetation to the left side
• Push the scythe back to the starting point of the new cut, with the blade always resting on the ground, and take a step of the width of the cut grass
• The width of the cut vegetation remains the same throughout the movement. During cutting, the blade always rests on the ground to avoid fatigue
• Reverse right and left if the user is left-handed

Safety tips

Paradoxically, using a poorly sharpened tool is dangerous as it requires twice as much energy and quickly causes fatigue. Learning how to sharpen a tool and doing it regularly is essential.
