More information

Despite its vigour, this graceful and light modern rosebush can be grown as a bush or trained to climb by espaliering it against a wall or pergola. Its small 3 cm (1in) flowers, single and pearly white with a hint of pink when they bloom, fade to white. Gathered in generous clusters, they bloom throughout the summer, emitting a pleasant light apple fragrance, covering a very healthy glossy foliage. It adapts well to both cold regions and hot climates!

Description

The Golden 'Sourire d'Orchidée Rose is a modern hybrid variety born in the 80s, but it is often offered with old and botanical roses as it possesses their charm and grace. Both vigorous and romantic with its almost single small flowers of great delicacy, it can form a large bush or be trained to climb according to each gardener's desires and the space available. Its flowering, which repeats well in autumn, is always generous: despite the climatic conditions, it blooms for 4 to 5 months with beautiful clusters of pale pink and pearly wild roses, becoming almost white when fully mature. It is also sturdy, healthy, and easy to grow in all our regions. Its fresh scent of apple and wild rose is ideal for a natural and scented garden!

The climbing rose 'Golden 'Sourire d'Orchidée' is a French creation by Paul Croix, dating back to 1985. It is part of the complex family of modern clustered-flowered hybrids. It is a powerful climbing rose with rapid growth, reaching an average height of 3.50m (11ft) if trellised. If left to grow freely, it forms a bush of about 1.80m (6ft) in all directions. Its habit is upright but flexible, ample, without stiffness. The flowering starts in June, continues throughout the summer, slows down in September, and then starts again in October, only ending with the first frost. Clusters of pale salmon-pink buds open into many small corollas, 3-4cm (1-2in) in size, single to semi-double, gathered in trailing clusters. These small wild roses are tinted with fresh and tender pink when they bloom but quickly turn white. They display a beautiful heart of yellow stamens. Their flowers not only have the shape of wild roses but also possess a light and very gentle fragrance, fresh and fruity, captivating in hot weather. They also have excellent endurance, both in hot and humid conditions. The bush has abundant, deciduous foliage, finely divided into leaflets, with a fresh apple green colour and delicately shiny. It remains healthy and perfectly enhances the shell-like hue of the flowers.

'Golden Orchid Smile' is a sturdy and refined rose, naturally generous and easy to grow. If left to grow freely, it forms a precious and highly ornamental bush at the back of a border. It is easy to train on a pole, a small arbour, a slightly shaded wall, or a column. Like other large roses, such as Iceberg, R.californica Plena, R.moyesii Geranium, or Palais Royal, with which it pairs well, it is incomparable for giving a slightly abandoned look to overly strict borders. It is an ideal companion for an old fruit tree, a pillar, and the sheds to which it adds a charming touch. Trained on an arch near the terrace, it will create a poetic and fragrant passage. It is easy to maintain a bushy habit, but it can also be planted in a mixed hedge alongside viburnums, mock oranges, hibiscus, or lilacs. In an English or romantic garden, a carpet of Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant' or 'Magic Summer', backed by a small bed of 'The Fairy' roses (pink or white), will form a delightful setting at its base.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Sourire d'Orchidée' rose from November to March in ordinary, well-prepared, and well-drained soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, compact, or dry in summer, it is advisable to incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the planting hole. However, this highly hardy and heat-resistant rose is sensitive to waterlogged soils in winter. Plant it in a sunny location or partial shade, which it tolerates well. Roses are hungry plants so a specific fertiliser will be beneficial at the start of the growing season and regularly throughout the flowering period. To encourage repeat flowering, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, in late winter, prune the stems to about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem). Always prune above an outward-facing bud to promote bushiness and prevent the branches from becoming tangled in the centre of the canopy.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but it's a natural occurrence that doesn't harm the plant.
