Description

The English rose Jubilee Celebration is one of the most refined varieties created by David Austin. Of a beautiful size, its opulent dome-shaped flowers, in a golden-washed salmon pink or rosewood colour that changes under the light, are like ceramic or sugar roses. They succeed one another tirelessly in a perfumed cloud, gracefully leaning above a very beautiful bush.

This bush develops a wide and tall bush, about 1.20 m (4ft) in all directions, with a slightly trailing habit. It produces long arching branches, which are very floriferous. While this characteristic may be a bit confusing in its early years, it later becomes less pronounced and proves to be an advantage when one wishes to integrate it into romantically inspired borders, as it gives it a lot of versatility. Its bountiful roses are carried by slender stems and tend to droop downwards, especially in the early years. They stand out well above a very healthy foliage. Vigorous and fast-growing, the bush is capable of covering an area of 1 to 2 m² in just a few seasons. 'Jubilee Celebration' shows good resistance to diseases, reblooms with great regularity from summer to frost, and offers a powerful fragrance dominated by fresh lemon and raspberry.

The Jubilee Celebration rose embodies the perfect marriage between the somewhat nostalgic splendor of roses from the past and the perfection of modern roses. It is best planted at the front of borders and allows for beautiful combinations with other English roses, such as Harlow Carr, Wildeve, as well as annual or perennial plants, in harmonious or contrasting combinations, in a garden with a modern and sleek style or, on the contrary, an exuberant style. As companion plants, you can choose tall perennials (foxgloves, delphiniums, phlox, meadow rues) or groundcovering plants (mulleins, Cotoneaster dammeri), ethereal plants (Gauras, gypsophila) or graphic plants (grasses), climbing plants (clematis, sweet peas) or trailing plants (purple morning glories, petunias), and thus create endlessly varied scenes and encourage biodiversity.

This rose was named to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

Created by David Austin in 2002.

Planting and care

Plant your English Rose Jubilee Celebration in a sunny or lightly shaded position. English roses are tolerant but will not appreciate excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and rich enough. To plant your rose, work the soil well by crumbling it and put an amendment, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage rooting.

Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning is done at an angle above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers, as this stimulates the development of other buds.

Roses are often spotted or unsightly at the end of summer, but it is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
