I had this amazing rose bush in my small garden in London and was determined to showcase it here in the boring gardens of the French Southwest. Planted a few weeks ago, it already has plenty of healthy growth. If all goes well, it will soon cover the wall of my barn, as the plant is a beautiful and gentle giant!

Description

The English climbing rose Malvern Hills is an exceptional variety that is repeat flowering. Its roses are small, full and double, displaying a coppery yellow hue, assembled in medium-sized clusters, which are delightfully fragrant. Its growth is vigorous, and its foliage is elegant, fine and glossy, covering slightly thorny stems. Perfect for elegantly covering a pergola, an arbor, or hiding an unsightly fence.

The Malvern Hills rose is an English climbing musk rose. It inherits from its ancestors Rosa moschata and Rosa chinensis its repeat flowering nature, a sweet and musky fragrance, and a vigorous vegetation. This climber easily reaches a height of 3m (10ft), with fairly rapid growth. It has a very elegant, bright green foliage, particularly glossy and finely cut, semi-evergreen, elliptical in shape, with an acuminate tip and an obtuse base. Its flowers, small in size, are round, double and full, gathered in clusters produced on the plant from summer to early autumn. Each flower takes the form of a rosette with a small calyx. Their orange-yellow colour fades with time, especially towards the outer part of the corolla. Their fragrance is that of nutmeg and musk roses. Its fruit is ovoid, red and villous.

Resistant to diseases, the Malvern Hills climbing rose adapts to both hot and cold climates, and can withstand temperatures as low as -15/-20°C. It is a vigorous and problem-free variety, which, like other climbers, is invaluable for filling large spaces and giving a slightly wild look, planted behind overly formal flowerbeds. It can also be encouraged to climb bushes or trees. It is a perfect choice for decorating an old wall, an arch, a pergola or a trellis.

This rose is named after the beautiful Malvern Hills, located south of the nursery of David Austin.

Planting and care

Plant your English Climbing Rose Malvern Hills in a sunny or lightly shaded position. English roses are tolerant but do not like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and rich enough. To plant your rose, prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water abundantly after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root growth. Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest level), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning is done at an angle above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers to stimulate the development of other buds.

Roses are often spotted or unsightly in late summer, but it is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose; it is a natural phenomenon.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune in late winter, arch the branches by directing them in a slightly ascending horizontal position. Pinch back the tips of the main branches and cut back the secondary branches to two or three buds. Choose an outward-facing bud for a more graceful habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning should be done at a slant above a bud. As the flowering progresses, if possible, remove faded flowers, as this stimulates the development of other buds.

Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
