Description

The Scepter'd Isle English Rose is a very pretty rose created by David Austin, known for its floribundity and powerful fragrance. It blooms almost continuously, from summer to autumn, producing numerous flowers of modest but lovely size. The double cup-shaped blooms are pale pink on the outside, with a deeper pink centre, revealing a heart of yellow stamens. They open on an upright and healthy bush, exuding a powerful fragrance of old-fashioned roses with hints of myrrh. The combination of fragrance and an excellent ability to rebloom makes this variety a charming rose to plant in the foreground of a border or near the house.

This medium-sized rose forms an upright bush, reaching a maximum height of 1.10 m (4ft) and an average width of 90 cm (35in). Its growth is rapid and vigorous, and its stems are covered with dark green foliage that is relatively disease-resistant in good growing conditions. On this well-reblooming bush, the rounded and deep pink buds open to form a fairly flat, double cup-shaped flower composed of 40 petals, revealing a golden yellow centre at full bloom. The ones in the centre are a brighter pink. They are 7-8 cm (3in) wide, facing upwards and clustered in bouquets at the end of sturdy stems. Their heady fragrance evokes a touch of myrrh, especially in warm weather.

A marvel of refinement, possessing a unique charm and great elegance, Scepter'd Isle fits well even in small gardens. In a border, it can be paired with numerous simple and graceful perennial or biennial plants such as bellflowers, catmints, mallows, lavenders, and delphiniums. It can also be combined with other roses with white, mauve, or red blooms. Roses grow well with climbing plants, and for this rose, a small herbaceous or a viticella clematis could be chosen. Don't forget to place the Scepter'd Isle rose near the house, terrace, or pathway to fully enjoy its fragrance.

Created by David Austin in 1996, belonging to the category of English Shrub Roses.

Planting and care

Plant your English Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded location. English roses are fairly tolerant but will not like excessive limestone. They will grow in any garden as long as the soil is well-worked and rich enough. To plant your rose, prepare the soil by breaking it up and adding a base fertiliser, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets, then regularly for a few weeks to aid root growth.

Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest point), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant shape. At the same time, remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Prune at a slant above a bud. Deadhead regularly to encourage the development of other buds.

For climbing roses: the previously bloomed stems should be reduced to 3 or 4 buds or pruned to 15cm (6in). The new strong stems should be tied in and the old stems removed if necessary. Cut to an outward-facing bud for a more elegant shape. At the same time, remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Prune at a slant above a bud. Deadhead regularly to encourage the development of other buds.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
