Thank you to Hélène (order preparation and quality control) for the rose bush received, it appears to be healthy. I will wait until spring to confirm its successful growth. I also appreciate that the original AUSTIN green and white label is still present on one of the branches (an extra star!). Note => the labels on the pots are unnecessary (since they end up in the bin...)." The English rose Sir John Betjeman stands out with its double flowers which are an intense fuchsia pink colour. These bloom in a dome shape while their while their colour intensifies. There is a rather modern character in its large-sized flowers, with a light fragrance, but also in the bushy and upright habit of this rose, which is of modest size but very floriferous. Brightly coloured roses awaken flower beds and romantic bouquets.
This rose takes its time to reach its full potential. This modest-sized bush will reach about 1m (3ft) in height and 75cm (30in) in width, with a rather upright habit and branches that slightly bend under the weight of the flowers. Its growth is rather slow and its thorny stems are covered with foliage that is quite resistant to diseases. On this repeat flowering bush, dark pink buds are next to pendulous flowers, formed in large globular rosettes measuring 7 to 8 cm (3in) in diameter. They are a very bright pink, carmine in the centre, and darken over the course of the days. They release a fresh but discreet fragrance.
Rose Sir John Betjeman forms a bright and very colourful bush that will be magnificent in a rose bed or in front of a cluster of flowering shrubs (buddleias, lilacs, spireas, deutzias, mock oranges, kolwitzias). In mixed borders, it will accompany perennial plants such as gypsophila, phlox, or tall foxgloves. Planting it in a small hedge or in a group of 3 subjects will give it more impact. It will also stand out in front of a box or yew screen, or surrounded by a miniature hedge as seen in Italian or French gardens.
Obtained by David Austin in 2008. English rose.

Botanical data
Plant your English rose Sir John Betjeman in a sunny or lightly shaded location. English roses are tolerant, but they won't appreciate excessive limestone, and this variety doesn't like excessively wet soils and climates. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well-worked and sufficiently rich.
To plant your rose, prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water abundantly after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root growth.
Pruning English roses is essential for flowering. At the end of winter, shorten the branches to 3-5 buds above the ground (at the lowest level), choosing an outward-facing bud for a more elegant habit. Take advantage of this pruning to remove dead wood and unsightly branches. Pruning is done at an angle above a bud. As the flowers bloom, remove faded flowers to stimulate the development of other buds.
Roses are often spotted or unsightly in late summer, but it is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose; it is a natural phenomenon.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
