Planting and care

Roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sunshine per day), but require shelter from scorching midday rays and strong winds. Roses appreciate loose, permeable soil rich in humus. They prefer slightly acidic soil, but will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well cultivated and sufficiently rich. When transplanting your potted rose, work the soil in a planting hole measuring 25 cm (10in) in all directions, crumbling it well and placing a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the hole. Remove your plant from the pot and position it so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in and water generously to eliminate air pockets. During dry weather it will be necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering.
