Description

The  'Lilli Marleen' Rose Bush is a flowering and reliable plant, a classic in flower gardens. Its semi-double roses are a vibrant and velvety red, grouped in dazzling bouquets highlighted by beautiful foliage in a very dark green, quite resistant to diseases. This fairly low but vigorous and well-branched bush provides continuous summer flowering. Ideal for creating borders and sunny flower beds, in small spaces, or the terrace.

The 'Lilli Marleen' Rose Bush is a famous German creation by Kordes, dating back to 1959. This variety, belonging to the floribunda family, quickly forms a ramified and compact bush, with thorny stems, 65 cm (26in) tall and 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) wide. It is covered with light foliage, initially red and turning very dark green in summer. Its flowering is abundant from June to September, and then continues until November. Its wide corollas, measuring 6 to 7 cm (2 to 3in), semi-double, composed of 25 petals, are gathered in bouquets of 5 to 7 flowers. The tightly closed buds open into globular flowers, with petals curved like shells, gradually blooming into flatter and more open cups. The petals are a vibrant and perfectly uniform red. The fragrance is light.

Floribunda roses allow for the creation of beautiful small hedges on the edge of the terrace or in small shrub beds. Combine them with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris, for example. They are good companions for paniculate phlox and tall baby's breath. The modest size and diseaseresistance of 'Lilli Marleen' make it an interesting variety for all gardens, even small ones, and for cultivation in large pots. Its use is versatile, according to the gardener's desires: in a rose bed or mixed with easy-to-grow perennials like perennial geraniums, small-flowered carnations, or asters. These perfumed roses with their old-fashioned charm are also touching in bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant this floribunda rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

Care

Pruning instructions To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March
Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
