Thanks to the individuals (Shauna for order preparation and shipping service), the rose bush I received appears healthy. Planted near the 'Alexander Von Humboldt' variety, I am now waiting to see how it develops... Note: Received without the variety label (which is essential for identifying the rose bush in all seasons).

Description

Rosa 'Marondo' rose bush is a brand new variety of ground cover rose from Kordes, appreciated for its disease resistance and its long, elegant velvet red flowering. With a slightly spreading habit, this small and lively bush forms a remarkable dome of semi-double roses, for 4 to 5 months. Its beautiful, shiny dark green foliage, is not disfigured by rose diseases. Robust and hardy, this rose bush requires little attention and care. Elegant, shiny, and generous, it works well in front of taller shrubs, in large borders along pathways...

The flowers of Rosa Marondo are gathered in terminal clusters, the same as the polyantha rose, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and Rosa chinensis. This excellent variety was introduced in 2017 by the German rose breeder Kordes.

This compact and neat bush has a slightly wider than tall habit. It will reach about 60 cm (24in) high with a spread of 70 cm (28in) in a few years. The 5 to 6 cm (2in) flowers, with 9 to 16 petals are gathered in abundant clusters of 5 to 6 from June to October, if the soil remains moist. In Marondo, the intense red flower buds open into velvety, deep red flowers, sometimes marked with rare small white streaks. They open widely to reveal a beautiful cluster of golden stamens. The flowers are followed by numerous small red hips that remain decorative until winter. This variety is very disease-resistant and has elegant, dense, shiny dark green foliage. Its stems are thorny.

The 'Marondo' rose thrives in all soils that are not too dry and all climates, which allows it to be grown in most regions. It works well as a border plant, in flower beds, in pots on the terrace, or on a large slope where it will cover and retain the soil. It can also be planted in groups of 3, arranged in a triangle, or as a specimen on a lawn. Plant it en masse or paired with white ground cover roses (Swany, Marie Pavie) to highlight a path or borders of light or opulent shrubs and perennials. For example, it can be paired with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, foxgloves, or perennial salvias.

Planting and care

Roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong wind. Roses like loose, permeable, and humus-rich soil. They prefer slightly acidic soil but will thrive in any garden as long as the soil is well-worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, prepare the soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in) by digging it well and placing a base fertiliser such as bonemeal at the bottom of the planting hole. Remove your rose from its pot and position it covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in the hole, and water thoroughly to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to aid root growth. Provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates flowering.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this is not a problem for their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, it is a natural phenomenon.
