Planted at the beginning of the year, this Château de Munsbach rose has settled in nicely, its beautiful habit is pleasant to look at and especially it gives us a very beautiful second flowering in autumn with its delicate small flowers grouped in lovely clusters. It has a lot of charm while appearing quite hardy, as it is not planted in the best soil in our garden.

Description

The 'Château de Munsbach' shrub rose is part of the beautiful creations by Lens Roses that deserve to be planted more in our gardens. It is a vigorous bush with a well-branched habit and an upright port, and its remarkable flowering consists of large clusters of lightly scented pale yellow to white roses. The flowering is perfectly complemented by beautiful, shiny, dark green foliage. It looks stunning in early summer in borders or hedges, and the plant is even more floriferous in autumn. Its flowers are also beautiful in a vase.

The 'Château de Munsbach' rose 'VEL11mreal' is a Belgian creation by Lens Roses dating back to 2018. It is derived, among others, from the musk rose (Rosa x moschata), a spontaneous hybrid probably originating from Asia Minor or the Middle East. Similar to polyanthas and floribundas, roses of this family produce flowers clustered in bouquets, but their colours are more refined, and they have a more flexible and graceful habit. These bushes often develop numerous shoots from their base during flowering in the summer. 'Château de Munsbach' rapidly grows and produces robust and erect stems. Left unpruned, this bush reaches a height of 1.20 m (4ft) to 1.50 m (5ft) with a spread of 90 cm (35in). Its leaves are divided into glossy elliptical leaflets, dark green in color. The young leaves are lighter green. Absent in winter, the deciduous foliage is not very susceptible to rose diseases. The first flowering occurs between June and early July and occasionally blooms sporadically during summer. The October flowering is spectacular. It takes the form of large round clusters that can contain up to 30 small double flowers measuring 4 cm (2in) in diameter. Each flower opens in a relatively light yellow, lemon yellow to butter yellow, then evolves towards white. The fragrance of the flowers is subtle. This rose has excellent hardiness.

This 'Château de Munsbach' shrub rose thrives in well-prepared, loosened, and fertilized soil. Plant it in a rose bed, a small flowering hedge with other botanical or shrub roses for hedges (Robusta, Hansa, Pénélope, ...), lilacs of modest size (Syringa meyeri Flowerfesta White), mock oranges, or Japanese quinces. Also, consider pairing it with a Viticella group clematis, as easy-going as all these shrubs. Finally, its large clusters of flowers on sturdy stems are perfect for cutting.

Planting and care

To plant your 'Chateau de Munsbach' rose, prepare your soil to a depth of 30 cubic cm by crumbling the soil and adding a base amendment such as blood, fish and bone at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, remove it from its pot, and cover the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water generously to remove any air pockets. During dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to aid in root development. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser to encourage flowering.

Roses may develop unsightly marks at the end of summer, but this is a natural phenomenon and does not harm their growth.
