Description

The 'Anastasia' Rose is a modern hybrid tea rose that is generous, lush, elegant, highly fragrant and very healthy. This bush, draped in superb glossy foliage of rare luxuriance, produces large solitary, double, and turbinate flowers, almost white, enveloping a tightly packed heart of amber yellow colour that exhales a very beautiful fragrance with citrus notes. They never cease to seduce, from summer to autumn, in the garden as well as in homemade bouquets. This rose deserves to be included in every flower garden.

'Anastasia' is a modern bush rose with large flowers obtained by Michel Adam. This variety has already received numerous awards:

A Bronze Medal at the 'Grandes Roses du Siècle' competition in Lyon in 2011, the Silver Medal in Monza in 2012, the Gold Medal in Rome in 2012 as well, and the Gold Medal at the 'Grand Prix de la Rose' organised by the National Horticultural Society of France in 2013. It recently obtained the highly selective German label A.D.R, which rewards the most disease-resistant roses, among other qualities.

'Anastasia' forms a beautiful bush with a bushy habit that reaches approximately 1m (3ft) in height and 70-80cm (28-32in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. It produces strong branches that bear particularly abundant foliage, of a glossy forest green, resistant to diseases. Throughout the beautiful season and until autumn, if one takes care to remove faded flowers, the plant produces numerous pale yellow buds that bloom into large flowers with 30 petals, paling almost to white over time. They are tubular, typical of hybrid tea roses, with a tightly packed heart that retains a warm amber yellow colour for a long time, warming the overall flower. They are mostly solitary, carried at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerging on 2-year-old stems. The flowering, recurrent, is also distinguished by a very pronounced, rather fruity fragrance. Note that the flowers of this variety are very long-lasting on the bush as well as in a vase.

This 'Anastasia' rose, with its luxuriant vegetation, soft colour, and sweet fragrance, is ideal in a small hedge, a bed of roses or light perennials, or as a standalone in a well-maintained small garden. It is also perfect for use in large borders, where it makes a big impact when planted in groups of 3 plants. It can be associated, for example, with tender pink, orange, or red roses, white paniculate phlox, red penstemons, dames' rocket, blue to violet blue sage, as well as silver foliage plants (wormwood, silver cineraria) or dark ones like boxwoods, Distylium x 'Blue Cascade', cotoneasters. Its cut flowers, with good longevity, are naturally perfect in bouquets

Planting and care

Plant your 'Anastasia' Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded location. Modern roses are tolerant but do not appreciate excess limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and rich enough. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it well and put an amendment, such as dried blood or dehydrated horn, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to remove air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting.

Pruning modern perpetual roses is essential for flowering. It is done in three stages:

1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have bloomed during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove faded flowers along with their stems, leaving 2 or 3 leaves.

2. Preparatory autumn pruning: light pruning that anticipates the true spring pruning. In regions with cold winters, it is not recommended tas it can weaken the bush.

3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long: prune the young strong branches to a quarter of their length.

Pruning always aims to open up the centre of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. Keep the most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned branches, to maintain a beautiful habit. Always prune at an angle, ½ cm or 1 cm (<1in) above an outward-facing bud.
