Description

The 'Crazy Fashion' Rose is a modern hybrid tea rose that brilliantly revives the timeless charm of variegated old roses. On a robust, vigorous, and floriferous bush with dark, glossy foliage, large round flowers with double petals in a deep pink colour are randomly and brilliantly streaked with white. This flowering continues to charm from summer to autumn, enveloped in a cloud of sweet, fruity, and rustic fragrance. This flower is a decoration for the garden and a treasure for homemade bouquets!

'Crazy Fashion' is a modern bush rose with large flowers bred by Nirp International before 2010. This beautiful bushy and upright shrub, well-balanced, reaches about 1.05m (3ft) in height and 65cm (26in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. It produces strong branches that bear elegant, sturdy foliage in a glossy dark green colour, less susceptible to diseases. Throughout the summer, if faded flowers are removed, the plant continuously produces very large flowers with an indescribable style, composed of 50 to 60 petals, measuring 13cm (5in) in diameter, opening into slightly globular cups. They are solitary, sometimes grouped in 2 or 3, borne at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerging from 2-year-old stems. The repeat flowering is also distinguished by a complex and powerful fragrance: a base of old rose enriched with red fruit notes and lingering freshness of grapefruit and lemon.

This 'Crazy Fashion' rose, with its vibrant colour and delicious fragrance, is ideal as a backdrop for a bed of roses or delicate perennials or as a solitary specimen in a small, well-maintained garden. It is also perfect for use in large, monochromatic, and fragrant borders, as its rich colour can be difficult to match. For example, it can be paired with white or pink Phlox paniculata, red penstemons, fuchsia pink shrubby salvias, as well as the dark foliage of boxwoods, Distylium (x) Blue Cascade, and cotoneasters. Its cut flowers, with good longevity, are naturally perfect for bouquets.

Planting and care

When planting your 'Crazy Fashion' Rose, choose a spot that gets plenty of sun or light shade. These roses can grow in any garden, but they may not do well in soil with too much limestone. Prepare the soil by breaking it up and adding an amendment like blood, fish and bone to the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water generously to get rid of any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots develop.

Pruning is an important part of growing modern repeat-flowering roses. There are three stages of pruning:

1. Regular maintenance pruning: trim the branches that have bloomed during the season. Remove faded flowers along with their stems to encourage repeat flowering leaving two or three leaves.

2. Preparatory autumn pruning: a light pruning that anticipates the true spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters to avoid weakening the bush.

3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have become shoots measuring 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches by a quarter of their length.

When pruning, remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. Keep three to six well-positioned, vigorous branches to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) slant above an outward-facing bud.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning is an essential task for modern repeat-flowering roses to bloom properly. The process involves three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: Regularly shorten the branches that have bloomed throughout the season. Remove the faded flowers along with their stems to encourage repeat-flowering, leaving 2 or 3 leaves behind. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: This light pruning anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: Prune the young, strong branches to a quarter of their length when the buds become shoots measuring 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, usually in February-March. Pruning always aims to open up the center of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, should be preserved to maintain a beautiful habit. Always prune at a slight angle, ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) above an outward-facing bud.
