Thanks to the individuals (order preparation & shipping), the rose bush received is healthy. Planted near the variety 'Michel Onfray', I am now waiting to see its progress... (will it grow or not?).

Description

The 'Elle' Rose, dedicated to the eponymous women's magazine, is vigorous and compact, noted for its powerful fragrance at Bagatelle and Tokyo, as well as for the charm of its large, fully double roses with a perfect form typical of hybrid tea roses. Their original and feminine colour is a tender yellow tinged with orange and pink, and fruity notes of banana characterise their fragrance. It flowers from May until the first frost on ornamental foliage, glossy, dark green, and resistant to diseases. An exceptional cut flower!

The Elle Rose 'Meibderos' is a modern shrub rose related to hybrid tea roses, obtained in 1999 by Meilland, several times awarded in the United States in 2005 (it received the AARS, the most prestigious award in the USA), in Japan and France. With a bushy and compact habit, this bush reaches about 75 cm in height and 50 cm (20in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. It produces sturdy branches, which bear elegant and well-filled foliage. All summer, if faded flowers are removed, spiral buds appear and open into perfectly shaped roses composed of 50 to 55 petals measuring 13 cm (5in) in diameter. The colour is a blend of pink, apricot and cream. They are solitary, borne at the end of long shoots of the year or appearing on 2-year-old stems.

With its perfect and charming flowers, this rose 'Elle' is a delicate jewel for romantic or neat flowerbeds or as a solitary plant. With a moderate size and dense habit, it is ideal for planting in a small hedge or in a group of 3 plants and growing in a large pot. It blends well in low shrub flowerbeds with summer or autumn flowering mixed with light perennials and annuals. It can be beautifully showcased in front of a boxwood or yew hedge or, on the contrary, surrounded by a miniature hedge or a carefully organised maze, as in Italian or French gardens. It is also above all a generous rose, to be paired with a clematis with small white flowers like 'Mrs Robert Brydon' or with double pink flowers Clematis viticella 'Purpurea Plena Elegans'.

Obtained by Meilland in 1999.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Elle' Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded location. Modern roses are tolerant but do not appreciate excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden if the soil is well-worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, to the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of modern repeat flowering roses is essential for their blooming. It is done in three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have bloomed during the season. Remove the faded flowers and their stem to encourage repeat flowering, leaving 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: this light pruning anticipates the proper pruning in spring. In regions with cold winters, it is not recommended to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have become shoots measuring 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches by a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to open up the centre of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous ones, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned branches, should be retained to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) angle above an outward-facing bud.
