Description

The 'Ingrid Bergman' Rose will seduce lovers of large, perfectly shaped and powerfully coloured flowers, like those found in florists' bouquets. With their velvety blood-red colour, these roses exude a heady fragrance that characterises this somewhat theatrical rose. They bloom from June until the first frost on a bush adorned with beautiful, dark, glossy foliage, robust and resistant to diseases. It is a flower for bouquets and the garden in large rose beds that will not go unnoticed!

The 'Ingrid Bergman' Rose or 'Poulman', bred by the rose breeder Poulsen in 1984, belongs to the hybrid teas and, to this day, remains one of the best modern varieties of large red roses, awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in England and the Gold Medal in Belfast in 1985. The vigorous and compact plant forms a small, bushy shrub with a slightly upright, somewhat stiff growth habit. It will reach about 80 cm (32in) in height and 60 cm (24in) in width. From May-June until very late in the season, on dark green and shiny foliage, beautiful modern roses, 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) wide, solitary and borne on long sturdy stems, open up. They are perfectly uniform, of a deep, intense and velvety red, which remains stable from the beginning to the end of the flowering period. Their highly pronounced fragrance is described as floral. The dark green glossy foliage is resistant to diseases and perfectly enhances the pure colour of the roses—a very hardy variety.

This modern rose 'Ingrid Bergman', with its fragrance, the impeccable appearance of its velvet red flowers and its beautiful floribundity, will find its place in the garden in a large rose bed or as a standalone plant in a well-tended garden. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and to all climates, tolerating both rain and heat, which allows it to be welcomed without reservation from the north to the south of our country, even at medium altitudes. It pairs perfectly with white roses and pretty and easy-to-grow perennials like campanulas or foxgloves. Its flowers can create very professional bouquets that delicately perfume the house.

Planting and care

Planting your rose requires some preparation. Begin by working the soil to a depth of 25 cubic cm and adding a base amendment like blood, fish, and bone to the bottom of the planting hole. Remove the plant from its pot and position it by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Refill the hole and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. It's essential to water the rose regularly for a few weeks during dry weather to help the roots grow. Use a special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering. Choose a sunny location or partial shade to plant your rose in hot regions.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
