Description

The Marzipan® 'KORpanimar' large-flowered rose is a hybrid tea rose that charms with its large, very double blooms, changing from pale apricot to ivory cream as they finish opening. Rounded and cup-shaped, with numerous petals, they recall old roses, while the plant flowers as regularly as a modern rose. Its soft, spicy fragrance can be enjoyed both in the garden and in a bouquet. With its compact, upright habit, this rose from the Eleganza® Antique® collection easily finds a place in a small bed or a large container on the terrace.

Marzipan® belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a deciduous shrub: its leaves fall in autumn and reappear in spring. It belongs to the hybrid tea group, also known as large-flowered roses. These modern roses are the result of complex horticultural crosses. This Marzipan variety was created in Germany by Wilhelm-Alexander Kordes from a cross made in May 2014 between an unnamed selected seedling and the cultivar 'PEAfanfare'. It was introduced by W. Kordes' Söhne in 2024 and added to the Eleganza® Antique® collection, which brings together large-flowered roses with an old-fashioned form. The plant forms an upright, branched bush, reaching 80 cm to 1 m in height and spreading 40 to 60 cm. Its vigorous stems bear prickles, mainly on their lower sections. They are clothed in dark green, semi-glossy foliage divided into finely toothed leaflets. Young shoots show hints of purplish brown before turning green. The ovoid flower buds, tinged with orangey peach, open into large, very double cups measuring 8 to 10 cm across. Each rose has a large number of petals, up to ninety on well-formed flowers. The centre is a warmer apricot colour, then the whole flower gradually fades to cream and ivory. This colour palette can vary with temperature and sunlight. The flowers, borne mostly singly at the ends of straight stems, release a soft yet spicy fragrance. Flowering begins in late May or early June, depending on the climate, then continues in waves until the first frosts if faded flowers are removed. The foliage shows good resistance to black spot and powdery mildew. Kordes nevertheless reports greater susceptibility to rust. This rose is hardy to around -20 °C in well-drained soil. Its name 'Marzipan' refers to almond paste, whose soft colour inspired the breeder.

Marzipan® can be planted in a rose bed, near a pathway or in an area set aside for cut flowers. As its growth is fairly narrow, it is best planted in groups of three. Pair it with the roses 'Annapurna', in pure white, and 'Martin des Senteurs', in salmon and apricot tones. Perennials such as the herbaceous clematis 'New Love', the loosestrife Lysimachia atropurpurea 'Beaujolais' and the 'Azure Rush' geranium can also accompany it in a bed.

Planting and care

To plant your rose Marzipan, work the soil into a 40 cm cube, breaking it up well, and place a base fertiliser such as dried blood or hoof and horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, covering the graft union with 3 cm of soil. Backfill and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to help it establish. Also remember to feed your rose with a fertiliser specially formulated for roses to stimulate flowering.

Roses are often affected by spots or look unsightly at the end of summer, but this does not affect their development. These spots are not dangerous to the rose; they are a natural phenomenon. Follow all our advice on how to remedy this and read our article: Help: my roses have spots
