I would like to give a positive review, but I believe Promesse de fleurs is overselling. This is the second time I have ordered this rose bush and learned a few weeks later that I will not be receiving it, even though it was supposedly in stock. It's a bit disappointing.

Description

Rosa Papa Meilland is an extraordinary variety, which has held a special place in the hearts of gardeners worldwide for over 50 years. This generous rose never ceases to charm with its perfectly-formed flowers composed of velvety purple-crimson petals highlighted by deep blackish-blue reflections. These roses emit a remarkable fragrance. Plant this beauty in a bright and airy location that will show its gorgeous light green foliage to the best advantage.

Rosa Papa Meilland is a modern shrub rose, also known as hybrid tea rose, introduced in France in 1963 by Meilland. It is certainly one of the most acclaimed dark red roses internationally. Voted "Favourite Rose of the World" in 1988, it also won the gold medal in Geneva in 1962 and the perfume prize in Geneva in 1963. This beautiful bush reaches about 95cm (37in) in height and 70cm (28in) in width at maturity, with moderate growth. It produces sturdy branches, which bear abundant light green foliage. It is, however, susceptible to blackspot and powdery mildew. Its large flowers are typical of hybrid teas. They are composed of 30 to 35 petals, measuring 14cm (6in) in diameter. Throughout summer, they open majestically in a dark red and fragrant whirl. They are solitary, borne at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerging from 2-year-old stems. Their fragrance is sweet and sugary, with hints of lemon. The flowers will keep on blooming if faded blooms are removed.

Rosa Papa Meilland is perfect in all scented gardens. Its magnificent flowers will enhance the decor of any bed, even the humblest. With its heady fragrance, sumptuous flowers, and beautiful floribundity, it will fit perfectly in a large rose bed or stand alone in a small well-kept garden. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and all climates, tolerating both rain and heat. It pairs perfectly with pale-pink roses like 'Prince Jardinier', or white ones like 'Fée des Neiges', and easy-to-grow perennials like daylilies, perennial geraniums, or bellflowers.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded location. Modern roses are tolerant, but do not appreciate excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add fertiliser to the bottom of the planting hole (dried blood or dehydrated horn, for example). Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate rooting.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are not harmful to the rose, but are a natural phenomenon.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning is essential for flowering. It is done in three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have flowered during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove the faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters in order to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have developed into shoots 2 to 3cm (1in) long, trim the young strong branches by a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, will be kept to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1cm (0.4in) above an outward-facing bud.
