Purchased in a pot, received a small bush with some of the leaves already dead. It remains to be seen if it will survive.

Description

Rosa Sophie Rochas is part of the latest creations from the Delbard rose breeder, which prioritise fragrance without neglecting the elegance of the flowers or the plant's resistance. It stands out with its large double roses in a delightful soft pink colour. They are composed of strongly serrated petals. Their complex fragrance is described as harmonious, refined, with a powdery and floral base note of lilac and rose, and a top note of grapefruit and lemon, reminiscent of the perfume 'Femme' by Rochas, paying homage to feminine elegance. They bloom on a vigorous and continuously flowering bush, with dense and delicately serrated matte-green foliage.

Rosa Sophie Rochas 'Delroch' is a modern bush rose with large flowers related to hybrid tea roses, registered in 2017 by the Delbard rose breeder. It is a small bushy and upright shrub reaching approximately 70cm (28in) in height and 50cm (20in) in spread at maturity. It has a rapid growth rate when planted in rich and moist soil. It produces long, sturdy, and upright branches with few thorns, carrying dense foliage composed of dark green leaflets that are beautifully serrated. The foliage is less susceptible to diseases. It is deciduous and falls in autumn. Throughout the growing season, its large and beautifully turbinate flowers appear. They are approximately 10 to 12cm (4 to 5in) in diameter, composed of 50 curiously cut petals. They open majestically, like modern hybrid tea roses. Their colour is a light and pure pink. They are solitary, borne at the end of long shoots from the current year or by those that emerge from 2-year-old stems. Their fragrance is pronounced. The rose will flower continuously if faded blooms are removed, starting in June and ending with the first frosts.

Rosa Sophie Rochas is an embodiment of elegance and luxury. It is perfect for romantic borders. In the garden, plant it with delicate flowers, or plant it in groups of 3 specimens as focal points, surrounded by silvery foliage, perennial geraniums, and catmints, for example. It blends well in borders with summer or autumn flowering shrubs (caryopteris, dwarf buddleias, perovskia, mallow, and pastel-coloured shrubby salvias), or mixed with perennials and delicate annuals such as Crambe cordifolia, paniculate baby's breath, delphiniums, or tall foxgloves. This sumptuous rose can be placed near the house to enjoy its flowers at leisure.

Obtained by Delbard in 2017.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny or partially shaded location. Modern roses are tolerant, but do not like excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it and add fertiliser to the bottom of the planting hole (dried blood or dehydrated horn, for example). Water generously after planting to remove any air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development.

Roses are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but this will not hinder their development. These spots are a natural phenomenon and will not harm the rose.

Care

Pruning instructions Pruning is essential for flowering. It is done in three steps: 1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the branches that have flowered during the season. To encourage the reblooming of perpetual roses, remove the faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves. 2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the proper spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters in order to avoid weakening the bush. 3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have developed into shoots 2 to 3cm (1in) long, trim the young strong branches by a quarter of their length. Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches, usually 3 to 6 well-positioned ones, will be kept to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant, ½ cm or 1cm (0.4in) above an outward-facing bud.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
