Description

Rosa Vif Eclat is a small bush that will delight gardeners looking for a floriferous, robust, and natural-looking variety. This hybrid musk rose blooms continuously from June to the first frost, with beautiful clusters of tiny strawberry-red flowers with white centres. If not pruned, the late summer flowers will produce many decorative orange hips at the end of the season. Its foliage and flowers bring a touch of freshness to any setting. With its small size, Vif Eclat can be planted in large borders and flower beds or at the front of shrub beds.

Vif Eclat is a Belgian creation by Louis Lens dating back to 1992. It is derived, among others, from the musk rose (Rosa (x) moschata), a spontaneous hybrid probably originating from Asia Minor or the Middle East. Roses in this category produce flowers in clusters, similar to polyanthas and floribundas, but their colours are more refined, and they have a more flexible and graceful habit. 'Vif Eclat' has rapid growth and a bushy, slightly spreading habit. Ultimately, this bush reaches an average size of 70 cm (28in) in all directions. Its deciduous leaves are divided into very vibrant, fresh green, highly disease-resistant leaflets. Flowering begins in June, and continues until October if regularly deadheaded and the soil is kept slightly moist. It takes the form of large pyramidal bouquets composed of numerous small single flowers measuring 2 cm (1in) in diameter. Each bloom is a very vibrant pink-red with a white centre, attracting bees and pollinators. After pollination, small rounded hips form and turn orange when ripe. The hardiness of this rose is rated at -20°C (-4°F).

Vif Eclat is a wildlife friendly rose that feeds bees and provides birds with numerous small hips in autumn. Easy to grow and not very demanding, it thrives in well-prepared soil. Plant it at the front of a bed of roses or shrubs, along a pathway with white or pink ground cover roses, or in a flower bed with robust perennials (Chinese peonies, perennial geraniums, sages, etc.). Also consider planting it with a climbing herbaceous clematis that will weave through its branches.

Planting and care

To plant your Vif Eclat rosebush, work the soil well to a depth of 25 cm (10in and add a base fertiliser such as bonemeal. Remove your rose from its pot and position by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in the hole and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to aid rooting. Provide your rosebush with special rose fertiliser to stimulate flowering.

Rosebushes are often stained or unsightly at the end of summer, but it is not a problem for their development. These stains are not harmful to the rosebush, it is a natural phenomenon.
