Description

The 'Abracadabra' Rose, created by German rose breeder Kordes in 2014, is an unusual and variegated cluster-flowered rose that stands out in the garden. This vigorous upright bush produces bouquets of medium-sized double flowers, completely and randomly flamed with red, white, and yellow. It blooms all summer and is adorned with dark green foliage that is highly resistant to diseases. Resilient in adverse weather conditions, it is an original rose with a strong personality, worthy of attention in the garden.

The 'Abracadabra' Rose forms, within a few years, an upright bush with thorny stems, reaching a height of 90 cm (35in) and a spread of 70 cm (28in). It is adorned with very healthy foliage, which emerges red and becomes shiny dark green in summer. Its abundant flowering lasts from June to September. Its wide corollas, measuring 7 to 8 cm (3in), are highly double and turbinate, gathered in bouquets of 5 to 7 flowers. The tightly closed buds open into round, slightly flattened and fully open cups, with petals splashed with red, white, and even yellow at the centre, with colour variations from one flower to another. They have a light fragrance with hints of honey.

Floribunda roses are ideal for creating beautiful small hedges, planting them mixed along the edge of the terrace or in beds of small bushes. They can be combined with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris, for example. They make good companions for paniculate phlox and tall gypsophila. The medium size and resilience of 'Abracadabra' make it an interesting variety for all gardens, even small ones, and for growing in large pots. Its uses are varied, depending on the gardener's preferences: in a monochrome rose bed, as its colour can be challenging to match, or alongside white varieties such as 'Marie Pavie' or 'Swanny'. It pairs well with light and easy-to-grow plants such as perennial geraniums, small-flowered carnations, or asters. And its roses are beautiful in bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant this floribunda rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

Care

Pruning instructions To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
