Thank you to the individuals (for order preparation and shipping service), the bare-root rose received appears healthy to me. Planted near the 'Hot Yellow' variety, I am now patiently awaiting spring growth (or lack thereof)...

Description

The 'Bernstein' Rose is a compact, highly disease and pollution resistant bush rose, and a romantic variety with its lovely flowering in unusual amber yellow tones. Its flowers, considering the size of the plant, are large, double but light, delicately scented and very sturdy against bad weather. They bloom from May onwards, grouped in dense clusters on beautiful glossy dark green foliage. This variety combines the nostalgic charm of scented old roses with the long flowering period of modern roses, making it excellent for borders and bouquets.

The 'Bernstein' Rose is quite difficult to find in the European horticultural market. However, it is one of the excellent varieties created by the German rose breeder Tantau, and has given rise to some exceptional cultivars such as the 'Aprikola' rose. It forms a small, spiny bush in a few years, reaching a height of 70 to 75 cm (28 to 30in) and a width of 60 cm (24in). Highly branched, vigorous yet flexible, it is covered with very healthy foliage, with fairly wide, glossy dark green leaflets. It has an early and long flowering period; in bloom from May-June until September. This bush continually produces waves of wide corollas measuring 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in), semi-double to double, with 26 to 40 petals, grouped in bouquets of 5 to 7 flowers, reminiscent of the slightly blurred patterns of old roses. The tightly closed buds open into round, flat, and fully open cups, and then produce roses with warm and pastel shades, blending soft yellow, very mild orange, around a heart with amber reflections. Their fragrance is light to medium. This very hardy and perfectly healthy variety is not suitable for hot and dry conditions.

Floribunda roses can be used to create beautiful small hedges, planted mixed along the terrace or in borders with small shrubs. They can be combined with abelias, nandinas, or caryopteris, for example. They are good companions for paniculate phlox and tall gypsophila. The modest size and resistance of 'Bernstein' make it an interesting variety for urban gardens and cultivation in large pots. And its nostalgically charming scented roses are moving in bouquets.

This rose, bred by Tantau in 1987, is also known as 'Amaroela' or 'Ambra Rosata'.

Planting and care

Plant this floribunda rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

Care

Pruning instructions To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to March
Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
