A lovely little rose plant with very pretty flowers in shades of pink. Very sturdy, it withstands the rain quite well despite a few spots, but given the amount of water that fell this summer in the north, it's insignificant. It truly is a very pretty young plant. I really like it.

Description

The 'Fortuna' Rose is a beautiful creation by German rose breeder Kordes, a treasure of flowers to offer or to treat oneself to, equally at home in the garden or in a pot. It is a small, resilient, floriferous bush with a natural habit, adorned for months with small, tender pink flowers with salmon reflections, illuminated by a white centre. They offer bees their beautiful yellow stamens. Easy, exceptionally generous, and never sick, this rose gives much without requiring much maintenance. Simple and charming, it blends easily with other flowers and will find its place in any garden.

The 'Fortuna' rose (Koratomi) is a cultivar developed by Kordes and introduced to the market in 2002. It was awarded the prestigious German A.D.R. label the same year. This variety was also named the Golden Rose of The Hague. It is part of a series of roses, the 'Rigo Rosen', selected in partnership with 'Globe Planter' for their exceptional disease resistance and ability to flower enthusiastically, even in rainy and sunless regions. All Rigo-Roses ® have received the ADR label.

This 'Fortuna' variety belongs to the floribunda rose family and the groundcover or landscape rose category due to its low, compact and spreading habit. It quickly forms a very compact bush of about 50-60 cm (20-24in) in height with a roughly equivalent spread. Over time, the plant may spread further. The foliage is decorative and perfectly healthy, a beautiful dark green, with finely toothed glossy leaflets along the edges. Its flowering is particularly abundant and continuous from May to June until October if the soil remains somewhat moist in summer. Its 3-4 cm (1-2in) wide corollas are single, clustered in bouquets. This flowering withstands rain well and brings joy to pollinators. The foliage, deciduous, falls in autumn.

The 'Fortuna' can be used in pots, flower beds, large spaces, slopes, or low hedges. It adapts to all soils that are not too dry and to many climates, which allows it to be welcomed almost anywhere. Its bushy growth is wonderful in low shrub borders, paired with other Rigo Rosen varieties such as Hotline, Neon or Black Forest Rose. Planted en masse, it will border pathways and highlight flower beds. It can also be paired with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, lavenders, snapdragons, foxgloves, or other Stachys. Left to grow freely, it will form a natural-looking bush, perfect for adding a touch of rural charm to the patio.

Planting and care

To plant the 'Fortuna' rose, it is best to do so between November and March. The soil should be ordinary, well-prepared and well-drained, with a preference for clayey soils over light soils. If the soil is too sandy, compact or dry in summer, it is advisable to bury compost or well-rotted manure at the bottom of the planting hole. However, it is important to avoid waterlogged soils in winter. Plant the rose in a sunny location, preferably in partial shade.

Roses require a lot of nutrients, so using a rose fertiliser at the start of vegetation, and applying it regularly throughout the flowering period, would be beneficial. To encourage reblooming, it is important to regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, it is advisable to prune the stems to about a quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud so that the bush can bush out and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the branches.

Pruning is not essential, but you may choose to do so at the end of winter to clean up the old wood and shorten some branches to 2/3 of their growth.
