Description

The Rosier 'François Mauriac' or 'Fryentice' is a small bush that brings a rather rare orange colour to the garden, especially as it turns salmon-coloured and is accompanied by young leaves of a brilliant purple. This new variety bears 3 to 5 very double roses in a bouquet, shaped in an old-fashioned way that emits a pleasant fruity fragrance. It is a colourful variety and blooms well until October. Robust and easy to grow, its modest growth is perfect for creating large beds or beautiful flowering pots, extremely colourful for months.

'François Mauriac' or 'Fryentice' was registered in 2000 by the English rose breeder Fryer. It is a modern bush rose with large grouped flowers (floribunda) with a bushy habit. It reaches about 80 cm (32in) in height and 50 cm (20in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. This rose produces thorny branches that bear abundant foliage, divided into large toothed leaflets, shiny with a dark green tinged with purple. Its young shoots and leaves are beautifully coloured in reddish brown. Throughout the summer and until October, if faded flowers are removed, the plant continuously produces medium-sized double flowers, 8 cm (3in) in diameter, globular, and organised in quarters like old-fashioned roses. Their colour evolves from bright orange to salmon orange, becoming pale and golden before fading. The flowers are produced in small clusters at the end of long-year-old shoots or emerging on 2-year-old stems. The foliage of this variety is relatively disease-resistant under good growing conditions.

This floribunda rose 'François Mauriac' is perfect for creating beautiful borders, planted in mass along the terrace or in large, vibrant beds. Combine them with light, blue or white flowers: perennial flax, salvias, catmints, panicled baby's breath, or even bronze fennel, whose feathery foliage will complement its vibrant flowering. Planted in groups of 3, this 'François Mauriac' will form a beautifully colourful bush. Also, combine it with white ground cover roses (Swany, Marie Pavie), chamomiles or light grasses like Stipa (barbata, pennata, tenuifolia). Install it in a summer-coloured flower pot with marigolds or gaillardias.

Planting and care

When planting the floribunda rose 'Francois Mauriac', it's best to do so between November and March in soil that's ordinary, well-drained, and well-loosened. Roses prefer heavier, clayey soils to lighter ones. If the soil is too sandy, compact, or dry in summer, it's best to add compost or well-rotted manure to the bottom of the planting hole. But be careful not to plant in waterlogged soil during winter. Choose a sunny location or partial shade when planting. Roses are hungry plants and need specific fertiliser at the start of vegetation and regularly throughout flowering.

To encourage repeat flowering it's important to regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are vigorous and floriferous, so pruning stems by about one-quarter of their length (from 4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter is recommended. Always prune above an outward-facing bud to avoid branches becoming tangled in the centre of the branches and to promote bush thickening.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
