Thanks to the individuals (for order preparation and shipping), the rose bush I received appears healthy. Planted near the specific research area 'Elaine Paige' variety, I am now patiently waiting for it to take root... (or not?).

A truly attractive modern rose: on a healthy and sturdy bush, clusters of unusual roses, in an old-fashioned style, of a soft pink colour finely striated with lighter shades, sometimes reaching pure white, bloom. They exhale a powerful lemony fragrance. The plant flowers all summer in successive waves and is adorned with beautiful glossy dark green foliage.

Description

The 'Mascaret' Rose is a charming bush that combines the grace and fragrance of old roses with the resistance and floribundity of modern bushes. On this sturdy and healthy plant, bouquets of vaporous roses filled with translucent petals of a tender pink colour finely striated with lighter shades blossom, sometimes even reaching pure white. They exhale a powerful lemony fragrance. The flowering, abundant in early summer, reoccurs in waves until the end of the season. A true marvel, acclaimed by the public at the Rose Festival held in Lyon in May 2015.

The 'Mascaret' Rose was introduced in 2014 by the rosarian Orard. The plant forms, in a few years, a upright bush with thorny stems, 80 cm (32in) in height and 50-60 cm (20-24in) in width, adorned with healthy foliage, divided into large toothed leaflets of a glossy medium green. Its flowering is moderately recurrent, starting in May-June depending on the region, renewing in the heart of summer if the soil remains moist, and ending in October. Its corollas are fully double (70 to 80 petals), medium-sized, gathered in bouquets of 5 to 7 flowers. The tightly closed buds open into round cups, slightly flattened, with overlapping petals and a centre composed of small, tightly packed petals. The flowers, with their texture and colour, resemble those of certain peonies. The deciduous foliage falls in autumn.

Cluster-flowered roses allow for the creation of beautiful small hedges, planted mixed along the terrace or in small shrub beds. Associate them with dwarf weigelas, caryopteris, and peonies, for example. They are good companions for paniculate phlox and tall baby's breath. The modest size of this Mascaret rose allows for its adoption in all gardens, even small ones, or in a large pot to adorn the balcony or terrace. Its uses are varied, according to the desires of each gardener: in a rose bed, planted in groups of 3 to 5 plants, or in a large border. It will blend well with lightweight and easy-to-grow plants such as perennial geraniums (Geranium 'Blue Cloud', 'Anne Folkard', 'Nimbus', 'Orion'), campanulas (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, love-in-a-mist, foxgloves, phlox etc. Its flowers can be used to create elegant bouquets that delicately perfume the house.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Mascaret' rose from November to March, in ordinary, well-loosened and free-draining soil. Roses prefer clayey soils, rather heavy than light. In soil that is too sandy, too compact or too dry in summer, it is preferable to bury compost, decomposed manure or leaf-mould at the bottom of the planting hole. However, this rose dreads waterlogged soils in winter. Place it in a sunny position, at most in partial shade. Roses are greedy plants, a specific rose fertiliser application will be beneficial when the foliage emerges, then regularly during the entire flowering period.

To encourage re-blooming, regularly remove faded flowers. Floribunda rose varieties are more vigorous and floriferous than large-flowered rose varieties. Therefore, the stems should be pruned to about a quarter of their length (4 to 6 buds from the base of the stem) at the end of winter. Always prune above an outward-facing bud, so that the bush thickens and the branches do not become tangled in the centre of the shrub.
