Many thanks to Hélène for the order preparation and quality control, and Noëlla from the shipping department. The bare-root rose I received seems healthy. Now that it's been planted, I am eagerly awaiting its spring growth... or not? Note: I received it with the variety label (essential for identifying the rose in all seasons). This is the opinion of an amateur who has successfully planted over 800 different varieties of roses in their garden.

Description

The Climbing Rose 'Le Grand Huit' is distinguished by its beautiful weeping habit, its vigour, its beautiful health, and its remarkably fragrant red flowering. Its large, velvety dark red roses, of a large size, bloom from May until the first frost, in successive waves, creating sumptuous bouquets on a dark green, shiny foliage, resistant to diseases.  The plant, particularly ornamental when planted as a specimen, produces very beautiful flowers for bouquets.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (here the Climbing Rose 'Le Grand Huit') onto a single, well-vertical stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora),  the graft being done at 90 - 100 cm (35 - 39in) from the ground. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock in winter.

Le Grand Huit or Commandant Cousteau is a name given to two very fragrant roses with dark red, perpetual flowering. One of them is a small climbing rose, also known as Adabaring, while the second one is a shrub. These two roses were created by Michel Adam and possess the same disease resistance qualities. 'Le Grand Huit' Adabaring belongs to the complex family of Tea hybrids, also known as large-flowered roses. It is a recent creation dating back to 2004, awarded numerous times for its exceptional fragrance internationally.

Grafted as a standard rose, 'Le Grand Huit' has a characteristic weeping habit. Its stems are flexible and prickly. The young shoots and leaves of this variety are covered in a bloom of red. The adult foliage is shiny, dark green, particularly healthy. It perfectly enhances the colour of the flowers. This rose blooms abundantly from May to October if it is not lacking in water or nutrients. Its large roses, 10 - 12 cm (4 - 5in) wide, grouped in clusters, are composed of 26 to 40 petals in a very deep red hue. Their fragrance, powerful and sweet, falls into the category of fruity fragrances. The plant is leafless in winter.

Red standard roses, fragrant and repeat flowering, are rare enough to be sought after and appreciated at their true value. Always spectacular, they are exceptional when placed in isolation, in the centre of a bed, along a pathway, or in a container on a patio. The climbing rose 'Le Grand Huit' allows for the creation of magnificent displays throughout the summer, requiring little maintenance other than regular watering in summer in case of high heat and prolonged drought. To accompany it, choose for example white groundcover roses, phlox, perennial geraniums, delphiniums, foxgloves, catmints, and large baby's breath. Create sumptuous bouquets by pairing its roses with white lilacs, pink or white lilies....

Planting and care

To plant your Tige Le Grand Huit rose, work the soil to a depth of 40 cm (16in) by crumbling the earth and placing a base amendment such as bonemeal at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, then fill in and water generously to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to encourage root growth. Remember to provide your Tige rose with special rose fertiliser to stimulate plant flowering.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the rose on a stem's rootstock (the trunk0 by wrapping it with a thick winter cover.

Pruning of repeat flowering roses should be done at the end of winter. If the size of the rose is bothering you, shorten it, but do not force yourself to cut it back too much as it would harm the flowering. On the other hand, do not hesitate to prune the branches by removing dead wood and unsightly branches. Removing faded flowers as summer progresses promotes even more abundant flowering.
