Thanks to the people (order preparation & shipping / TBC & ?), the standard rose tree I received appears to be healthy. Now that it's planted, I'm looking forward to seeing how it grows...

Description

The Magic Meillandecor Weeping Rose (Meibonrib) forms a cascade of flowers for months, from early summer to the first frosts. It is covered with double flowers, light magenta pink with a golden heart, gathered in bouquets that release the scent of hawthorn. They bloom on foliage which is particularly decorative and bright green, and which is followed by interesting fruiting at the end of the season. Plant it in a prominent position in the centre of a flower bed, on a lawn or near the patio!

Weeping roses are obtained by grafting a variety (here the Magic Meillandecor landscape rose) onto a single and upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora), with the graft being made at the top. The branches gracefully fall in a cascade. They can be trained on a parasol support. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock 'trunk' in winter.

The landscape roses from the Meillandecor series have a wide and creeping habit, while offering abundant and repeat flowering throughout the beautiful season. The flowers of the 'Magic Meillandecor' rose, gathered in large terminal clusters, come from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and R. chinensis. It is a plant with good natural resistance to diseases and pests, with dense vegetation. This rose spreads well and develops long thorny stems. Grafted on a stem, it will reach about 2m (7ft) in height in a few years, with a minimum of 1m (3ft) in width. The 5 to 6cm (2in) flowers are formed by numerous undulating petals arranged in cups that open to reveal a beautiful golden yellow stamen heart. Their colour is a light magenta pink with a white base, fading slightly over time. This variety develops foliage that is fairly light olive green and very shiny. It falls in autumn.

The 'Magic Meillandecor' weeping rose can be prominently placed in the centre of a flower bed, among perennials or low bushes, in a row along a pathway, near a patio, or even in a large pot on a balcony. It pairs well with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints... Weeping roses are perfect for adding style and volume to beds of shrub roses or groundcover roses. You can plant grey foliage plants (Stachys lanata, Artemisia nana, Cerastium tomentosum...) or gauras at their base, for example. They also look wonderful planted along a pathway, in front of a large flower bed, or on either side of the garden entrance.

Planting and care

Weeping roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 hours of sun per day), but sheltered from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. Plant them from October to April. Easy to grow, roses appreciate loose, permeable, and humus-rich soils. They prefer a soil with a neutral pH, but will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked and sufficiently rich. To plant your rose, work the soil to a depth of 25 cm (10in), crumble the soil well, and place a base amendment such as bonemeal at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1 inch) of soil, backfill, and water thoroughly to remove air pockets. During dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Also, remember to provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates plant flowering.

Train the stems on a parasol stake, as this will help develop the shape of the rose's crown.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the rootstock of weeping roses (the 'trunk') by surrounding it with a thick winter cover.
