Description

The deciduous grafted Rose Parfum Royal is a magnificent specimen to showcase in the garden. Its 'trunk' supports a vigorous and trailing crown that is adorned with clusters of fragrant passion pink flowers, perfectly shaped and beautifully scented. Its large, elegantly turbinate roses with bright pink petals and silver markings encapsulate an intense fragrance, both fresh and fruity, with notes of classic rose. They bloom on abundant foliage, a very dark green, thick and shiny like leather, which adds to its elegance. Its early and almost continuous flowering lasts until late in the season.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (in this case, climbing Parfum Royal) onto a single and upright stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora), with the graft being done at a certain height, here at 90 - 100 cm (35 - 39in) from the ground. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock during winter.

The Parfum Royal rose belongs to the complex family of hybrid teas. It is a climbing mutation of the large-flowered Parfum Royal rose, obtained by French rose breeder Michel Adam in 2010. It is a vigorous rose with robust and thorny stems. Grafted onto a stem, it will reach a height of approximately 1.60 m (5ft) with a spread of 1 m (3ft), depending on growing conditions and pruning methods. Its foliage, very dark green and highly glossy, is naturally resistant to diseases such as blackspot and powdery mildew. Deciduous, it sheds its leaves in autumn and reappears in spring. Its flowering begins in May and continues until the first frosts. Its very large flowers are 12-14 cm (5-6in) wide, double, composed of 50 perfectly organized petals in a whirl. They are a vibrant and fresh pink with a pearly hue, while the undersides of the petals is much lighter, silver. Their fragrance is pronounced and it reblooms well.

This deciduous grafted Rose Parfum Royal, with its fragrance, romantic style, and perfect flowers, will find its place at the centre of a large rose bed, isolated in a well-maintained garden, aligned along a pathway, or even in a container on the patio. It pairs perfectly with white roses and pretty, easy-to-grow perennials such as perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves... Its flowers can be used to create very 'professional' bouquets that will delicately perfume the house. It will be perfect planted above romantically inspired beds, for example, with the mauve roses of Blue Girl and Mamy Blue or the white corollas of the English rose Winchester Cathedral.

Planting and care

To plant your Parfum Royal Rose, work your soil to a depth of 40 cm by crumbling the soil and adding a base amendment such as bonemeal.  Position your plant, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water thoroughly to remove any air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root growth. Also, remember to provide your Standard Rose with special rose fertiliser to stimulate plant flowering.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the rose standard's rootstock (the 'trunk') by wrapping it in a thick winter cover.

Pruning of repeat-flowering roses should be done at the end of winter. Shorten the plant if its size is inconvenient, but do not prune it too much, as this would harm flowering. However, do not hesitate to thin out the branches by removing dead wood and unsightly branches. Removing faded flowers throughout the summer promotes even more abundant flowering.
