Thanks to the individuals (Ludivine for order preparation & quality control, and Hélène from the shipping department), the bare root rose received seemed quite dry to me (no soil bag around the roots, just a piece of burlap). Planted quickly, I now hope for it to take root... (or not?). Note: Received with the variety label (essential for identifying the rose in all seasons). Opinion from an amateur who has successfully planted over 800 different varieties of roses in their garden.

Graden Merit
This standard rose develops a round and regular crown, on which large double flowers are born, combining pink and yellow to create a sumptuous result. The 14 cm (6in) roses, elegantly shaped, show a tight heart of canary yellow petals surrounded by wide petals edged with this more or less vibrant pink, becoming more prominent on the periphery. They are lightly scented. From June to October, this small tree creates a stunning display in the centre of a flowerbed, as a specimen in a lawn, or in a container on the patio. An award-winning variety in the U.S.A.

Description

The Pullman Orient Express Standard Rose, with its tree-like silhouette, has many qualities to attract enthusiasts of unusual but easy-to-grow plants. With its enormous bicoloured flowers, the unlikely combination of pink and yellow captures attention in the garden. The modern double roses are elegantly shaped, with a canary yellow centre surrounded by wide petals edged in pink, varying in intensity and sometimes tinged with salmon, more pronounced towards the edge of the corolla. The flowering, slightly fragrant, occurs from June to October, on healthy and harmonious foliage, perfect for showcasing in the garden or on the patio.

Standard roses are obtained by grafting a variety (in this case the Pullman Orient Express bush rose) onto a single, vertical stem belonging to a different rose (Rosa canina, R. laxa or R. multiflora), with the graft being made at a height of 90 - 100 cm (35 - 39in) from the ground. In very cold regions, it may be useful to protect the rootstock in winter.

'Pullman Orient Express 'Baipeace' is a modern variety related to hybrid tea roses, introduced in France in 2002 by Meilland. At first glance, its rose displays the characteristics of the famous variety 'Mme A. Meilland' ('Peace'). The awards received by this rose are prestigious: the AARS* in the USA in 2002, the Rose d'Or in Baden-Baden, as well as a very high distinction in England (A.G.M).

Grafted onto a stem, it presents a characteristic habit, with a slender and upright 'trunk' topped by a rounded, bushy, well-balanced crown. Its sturdy and thorny branches bear elegant foliage, semi-matte, dark green, and less prone to diseases. Throughout the summer, if care is taken to remove faded flowers, its enormous compound flowers with 45 petals, measuring 14 cm (6in) in diameter, open in perfectly formed cups. They are solitary, at the tips of long shoots from the current year or emerging from 2-year-old stems. The repeat-flowering is also distinguished by a light but pleasant, fruity and fresh fragrance of tea rose. The plant is devoid of foliage in winter.

* The highest award granted by the A.R.S: American Rose Society

This Pullman Orient Express Standard Rose is ideal as a specimen plant in a well-maintained small garden, in the centre of a flowerbed, along a pathway, or in a strategic location in the garden. It can also be planted in a large planter to adorn a balcony or patio. Its rich colour can be challenging to match. For example, it can be paired with white or orange Phlox paniculata, as well as with the dark foliage of boxwoods, creeping cotoneasters, or variegated yellow ivy, or even with the tall spikes of Baptisia Starlite Prairieblues.  Its cut flowers are perfect for bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant your Pullman Orient Express Standard Rose in a sunny or lightly shaded position. Modern roses are tolerant but do not appreciate excessive limestone. They will adapt to any garden as long as the soil is well worked, not too heavy, and rich enough. To plant your rose, work the soil by crumbling it well and placing an amendment, such as bonemeal, at the bottom of the planting hole. Water generously after planting to eliminate air pockets. Regularly water for a few weeks to encourage root establishment.

In regions with very cold winters, it is advisable to protect the standard rose rootstock (the 'trunk') by wrapping it in a thick winter cover.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is essential for flowering. It can be carried out in three steps:

1. Maintenance pruning: regularly shorten the flowering branches throughout the season. To encourage the reblooming of repeat flowering roses, remove faded flowers along with their stem and two or three leaves.

2. Preparatory pruning in autumn: light pruning that anticipates the true spring pruning. It is not recommended in regions with cold winters to avoid weakening the bush.

3. Spring pruning: in February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

Pruning always aims to clear the heart of the bush and remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots. The most vigorous branches will be kept, usually three to six well-positioned branches to maintain a beautiful habit. Always prune at a slant about ½ cm or 1 cm (0.5in) above a bud facing outward.
