Thanks to the team (for order preparation and shipping), the bare root rose bush I received looks healthy. Planted close to the "Yann Arthus Bertrand" variety, I am now patiently waiting for it to take root... or not?

Graden Merit
A modern rose bush in an old-fashioned style, with a bushy or climbing habit depending on the pruning, not exceeding 2m (7ft) in height. Floriferous, vigorous, and disease-free, it produces very full roses, with a vibrant pink colour warmed by salmon reflections, and a strong fragrance. This rose bush blooms abundantly in spring, rests in summer, and then blooms again in autumn. Its abundant, dark and shiny foliage, very healthy, is an additional asset.

Description

The 'Aloha' Rose is a modern hybrid Tea rose, introduced in 1949, which nevertheless possesses all the qualities of old roses, combined with an excellent flowering performance in autumn. Depending on one's preferences, it can be grown as a large bush or a small climber, as it has a vigorous temperament and a beautiful exuberance that is reflected in its large, fully bloomed roses with a heady fragrance. They also charm with their vivid pink colour warmed by salmon reflections, which remain unchanged under the sun or rain. This rose blooms abundantly in spring, rests in summer, and then blooms again in autumn. Its abundant, dark green and glossy foliage covers a vigorous, very healthy and truly charming bush!

The x Tea Rose 'Aloha' is a horticultural creation attributed to American hybridisers Boerner & Perkins. If left untrained, it forms a beautiful bush of 1.5m (5ft) to 1.7m (6ft) in height, but it can also produce long stems reaching 3m (10ft) after appropriate pruning, which can be trained against a wall or on a small tree. It has a fast growth rate. Its habit is highly branched, vigorous yet flexible, and covered with abundant and elegant foliage, dark green and glossy, composed of small, thick and finely toothed leaflets. Its early flowering is abundant in May-June, slows down in July-August, and then explodes again in September-October. Its roses, measuring 9 to 12cm (4 to 5in) in width, very full, solitary or grouped in small bouquets of 3-4 flowers, are carried by sturdy stems. The tightly closed buds open into flat rosettes composed of interlocking petals in shades of pink. Their fragrance is powerful, typical of old roses. The small fruits that delight birds in the winter are actually fleshy false fruits called hips.

'Aloha' is a robust and abundant rose with nostalgic charm. An excellent flowering bush, it is also easy to train on a pole or column. Like other large roses, such as Phyllis Bide or Mme Caroline Testout, with which it pairs so well, it is incomparable for creating a romantic touch when planted above perennial borders. It is an ideal companion for an old fruit tree, a small pillar, and sheds to which it adds tremendous charm. Trained on a small arch or arbour, near the terrace, it will create a poetic and fragrant passageway. As it is easy to maintain a bushy habit, it can also be planted in a mixed hedge, alongside viburnums, mock oranges, hibiscus, or lilacs.

Planting and care

The 'Aloha' rose adapts to any type of soil, even heavy or sandy, as long as care is taken while planting and it doesn't lack water or nutrients. Plant it in well-worked and well-drained ordinary soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant it in autumn, never when it freezes.

The 2-year-old branches are the most floriferous. It is useful to reduce the stems that bloomed the previous year to 3 or 4 buds, or pruned to 15cm (6in). The new sturdy stems will be trained and the old ones removed if necessary. Fairly hardy, this rose can resist -20°C (-4°F) and, if despite everything, after a harsh winter the branches freeze to the ground, shoots will regrow from the base in spring. It may be useful to remove dead wood in winter, or to remove faded flowers if fruit formation is not desired. If necessary, in spring, after the risk of frost, light pruning can be done. Climbing roses can also be allowed to grow freely if there is ample space.

If you plant a climbing rose next to a living tree, the rose's root system will compete with that of the already well-established tree. To control watering, here's a tip: plant the rose in a large container with a perforated bottom, at the base of the tree. The tree's roots won't penetrate the container for at least a year. Remove the container after 1 year, for example by cutting one side, without disturbing the rose's root system. By then, it will have had time to develop its root system and will be more resilient.
